Debating between something like the tomtom rider 40 - which can be had for just over £200 now Or an iPhone app with "lifeproof" case and good nav app on my iPhone 6, I can use my 8gb data plan abroad for £3/ month extra on the iPhone 6. Either would be mounted with a navihalter above my dash on the multi. Any suggestions or experience to offer would be appreciated.
Any particular model worth taking a look at for bikes in particular? Seen awful reviews for the zumo 550 about
Ive had my garmin zumo 550 for 8 years and it has never let me down . Been to europe at least 20 times through 8 countries at a time and it has never failed to find me hotels, petrol , routes etc . Think if someone gives them a bad review its down to poor abilities . not the garmins abilities though . I update mine every year , for free , so always have good maps . Cant fault it .
We are looking for a SatNav as well. We tried the iPhone but struggled with the reflection when it was sunny. I am A bit concerned a SatNav will also suffer from glare. Have any of you suffered with this?
In the multi navihalter position, I suffer from glare badly. Wouldn't matter what I put of there. I need to look for a case that has some pretty extreme sun shields (top and sides). Turning the brightness up to max does help on the iPhone though.
similar prob with glare unfortunatly,,, also the volume is a bit of a prob, especially with the termis on full chat ..
I sellotape a post-it note to my top yoke - when it blows off it's like the battery dying in a sat nav
How user-friendly is it for route planning? My car Garmin is a pain. You can only plot a route using via points and then it forces multi choice options on you. And can you upload route maps from the internet onto it?
If you use CoPilot in your iPhone you don't use any data abroad. Just download the maps of the relevant countries. I find the audio instructions really good and enable you to keep your eyes on the road more. Co pilot is about £29, so is the TomTom app but I haven't used that.
Ive just moved back from living in Prague for 5 years. I used Copilot HD on my iPhone for travelling all around Europe and it was faultless. I had it connected to an F4 Interphone intercom so if I couldn't see the screen it was no problem as the voice guidance was excellent. CoPilot doesn't use any mobile data as all of the maps are stored on the phone with regualr updates via the App Store. I had the phone held in an Interphone waterproof case and charged via an optimate usb charger that plugs into the battery charging lead. Just unplugged it when not in use. The bike was a fireblade (just recently bought the 848). I'll be fitting the same kit to the 848 when I get round to it. The route planning on the iPhone is really easy as well. Hope that helps. Lots of good options out there....
what system have you used for securing the iPhone to the navihalter? I like the look of this case :FRĒ WaterProof iPhone 6 Case | Take your iPhone 6 Anywhere And wonder if this mount they make would connect to the navihalter some how Universal iPhone Mount | LifeActiv Multi-purpose Mount from LifeProof
I'm not using the navihalter, just have it mounted in the same position by mounting it directly to what would be the screen adjuster handle (but I have a 2010). I used a product called Sugru. It's like bluetac but dries into a hard rubber and sticks to almost anything. Take a look at their website and you'll be using it to fix everything!
I'll also snap a pic of my mount when I get back to the bike later. Out at a clients at the mo and the bike's at the office.
Took me a 2nd go at reading but I'm with you now. No idea of the name of the case I use. eBay special. Will grab that pic in 30 mins. Thanks wroughtiron [emoji6]
