Anyone Got A Sena 50s ?

  1. Ive just got one and noticed (in my eyes) one glaring problem....ive just fitted it and obviously it sits below the profile of the bottom of my lid....meaning that when the lid is on a flat surface....its always going to be resting on that....! so eventually its gonna get scratched to shit....and maybe (and probably in my case) break....i am using the clamp....just out of curiosity can it be mounted on the side of the lid (up about an inch or so)???

In retrospect ive got an interfone f5 on my other lid which sticks on the side...easy! thought id take a punt with the sena but at the moment wishing i didnt...!

Wondered if there was some sort of aftermarket guard which i could put underneath it....?

  2. @comfysofa, my girlfriend has a clamp mounted, 50S on her X-Lite 803 and yes, the body of the unit sits below the helmet. Just looked at hers and there is no sign of any damage to the unit and the helmet has toured Spain, Portugal and France (twice). If I remember correctly (I will try and find the box) the 50S comes with an alternate adaptor and mount that you bond to the side of helmet with 3M tape. Andy

  3. Yes, it does have a surface mount but the main unit still sits below the rim of the helmet. I’d stick with the clamp, no pun intended. Andy

  4. I remember looking at the 50R and I’m sure that is the one that is designed to stick to the side of the helmet. Andy

  5. I've got two 50S units (love the mesh function) and yes the helmet will rest on the bottom of the clamp, but I trust this method to secure the unit, more than I do 3M tape, which is what the Sena stick on mount uses. On our old 30S's, over time the rubberized coating on the clamp did wear through, from repeatedly being set down on a hard surface but as long as you are careful or maybe even lay your gloves under your helmet when you set it down, rather than stuffing them inside (as some seem intent on doing, thereby transferring any dirt onto the liner) you'll be fine.

  6. Totally forgot to reply back..!

Sent it back today...from what i could see the sticky mount still had to sit proud of the bottom of the helmet...now this was going on my simpson which doesnt have a curved bottom so when it sits on a flat surface theres no "arch" on the bottom....the other thing...half as loud as my interphone so not good there and the biggie which i must confess i totally missed was its not totally waterproof...apparently Sena says if water gets in it powers off...i ride all year round... (commute to work) so thats a bit of a show stopper tbh...will probably go with a UCOM16...

  7. Whatever the helmet, the clamp by design, will always rest first on the surface before the helmet does. I am on my 3rd Sena model and have ridden in all weathers with them. Can't say I have ever had a problem. In one instance when caught out in torrential rain, I just tied a very small plastic bag over it with a rubber band, just to be sure. I believe Cardo claims to be 100% waterproof, but any entry/exit points for cable connections are always going to be weak spots regardless.

  8. Well, ive got an old Interphone F5 on my Shoei which has been faultless (its been on there i think about 6 years or so) - ive ridden through torrential rain countless numbers of times and its never failed (never had to put a bag round it or anything like that). Also it sticks directly on the side of the helmet so nothing atall is under the profile of the helmet. I think its a case of what youre used to...i like the design of the Interphone...plus ive just stripped it down and put a new battery in it (technology moves on and the new battery has a higher capacity so it now lasts even longer than before) - just ordered a UCOM16 - i dont know why but theyve split the battery up from the main unit but i can put up with that.
