Anyone Made A Supermono?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by 1037sps, Oct 28, 2014.

  1. So, I was planning on buying a 999, but I have a couple of road bikes already. Not Ducatis though.
A supermono however, I don't have :( and winters here, I get bored easy, and I've just seen a supermono thread :Wideyed:
I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what might be the right way to start if I did wanna play.
Money is tight, my last project took about 8 years and that started with a completely fine bike .
It's got to be Ducati framed. Initial thoughts are an SS. I'd like a Ducati engine too, bigger the better, maybe 1198 but a look on Fleabag shows there's a choice from 996 up for £1200 give or take. I may go TL1000 though.
Lopping off a cylinder I know I can do :Woot:, sorting the wobbly crank will obviously be the trouble :Nailbiting:. The original Ducati route seems the simplest, best and doable. IT HAS TO BE A CONVERTED TWIN, not just a single.
My question is, has anyone done any interesting odd bod swaps or builds that could offer advice?
    Thanks in advance folks.

  2. I know @Cranker V2 has but think may have been singles, but raced them too so probably knows someone who has

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. I'm sure there was a guy on dsc who did a 749 conversion

  4. I would guess you've probably seen/heard of Britalia Moto's Supermono? The Supermono Strada obviously they're a business making these to sell and I doubt would be tight budget friendly, but I was talking to the owner at a show a few years back and he was very helpful. Might be worth contacting them?

  5. Oh yes that's nice but honestly, it's too complicated for me to do.
There's been a few home made jobs by the looks of things.
Found a donor bike, I'll call about it tomorrow.
Air cooled might be a good idea actually, but not sure if i could get decent power.

  6. Not sure but...louigi moto I think has experience too and always seems happy to chat and share a bit of knowledge

  7. Yeah, just been looking at the strada. It's nice isn't it.
I know Rich very well. He built my 1037 and is 100% on my, people to call, list.

  8. lordmoonpie is building one, is does not really come on the forum though. He is on my Facebook so I will send hima message to contact you

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  9. Oh that'll be great MrC. Thanks a lot.
In my head it seems simple, but pound to a penny it'll shake itself to bits.

  10. I've been doing a bit of sideways thinking. Initially i thought I could keep the engine balanced just by taking the vertical head off and modding the coolant passages. Bingo. Nice simple mono. Defeating the object of light weight I know but I'd work on that.
Next though, after seeing someone using the vertical piston as a type of super charger, I've thought about just junking the vertical cams and valves, few home made reed blocks and bingo bango, a super charged single that wasn't as difficult to figure out as when i first saw it.
Of course, this buggers the light weight idea even more.
Maybe I should just by the 999 and take a plug out.
