V4 Apple Carplay Would Have Been Better

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by DREVIL, Feb 1, 2022.

  1. I just don't understand why Ducati didn't use Apple car play as the go to platform for the V4 Multi as a result we are forced to use Sygic which is not my choice of mapping I prefer to use MyRoute App where i am able to plan routes and friends are able to download these routes. Frankly for the money that's my main disappointment and a few small niggles.

  2. We all wonder that, all they need to do is pay the licence fee instead of parting about with technology that isn't up to the job. It's why we all have to go and buy a Sat Nav!

  3. For me, you might as well have written that in Chinese

  5. Android possibly.

  6. Most premium cars support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as options these days - and it makes complete sense. I love Apple CarPlay in my MINI, I'm never going back to having a car without it.

I agree it would be excellent if this could be made available on bikes, and it would actually work better through toggle switches than touchscreen in most use cases, imo (I always enter addresses on my iPhone and hit go in CarPlay anyway).

Reinventing the wheel, competing with multi-trillion dollar companies and associated developer ecosystems, is just silly.

  8. Because you have to pay licensing to embed AppleCar Play, all the OEM's are resisting putting it in

  9. So you waste money developing your own rubbish software? I’ve never got it to work properly on either of my last two Multistradas. I can’t imagine it would add that much to the overall cost, or just offer it as an option.

  10. My new Multi arrives next month, the satnav sounds like something else I’ll never use..all this stuff sounds good but in reality do we really need it !

  11. Honda have gone with Apple CarPlay on the current Africa Twin, so it can be done.

  12. When I my Multi V4 was on order , i did a quick check and research into the Satnav/syn system and swore never to touch it. The fact that you had to restart it on every shutdown was enough. (this is now fixed but i shall stick with my Garmin system for music/phone and Sat Nav

  15. Yes we need it so that we can plan our own routes its a bloody mission with Sygic !!

  16. ...well, sort of.

You get your Bosch systems in packages and Sygic is part of the deal... so I'm not defending Apple and their CarPlay licencing but Sygic is a part of a different caper.

Decent video about it all here...

  17. I'm not saying its' why they don't integrate it, although people who tend to use Apple (myself included) struggle to accept why anyone doesn't, that's why it's such a successful ecosystem (BTW I work for a mobile company, I'm fairly close to all this stuff), but I equally agree that manufacturers are wasting money developing other things that don't work.

Interesting my mate showed me his 'Kawasaki Ride' app last night, i'll get you a screenshot, it's absolutely HORRENDOUS, you won't believe what they are putting out there, it's supposed to replay the IMU data and show you your lean angle etc.

In general I think the motorcycle industry is really slow to grasp apps and digital development, my Alpinestar Airbag app is terrible, truly awful, and really flaky.

  18. I'm a software developer, currently mobile apps. My colleague has a Porsche Taycan and says the proprietary software is appalling - he had it a month before he could 'log in' to his car to access the personalisation features. The automotive industry are very slow adopters.

This is why Elon Musk / Tesla were able to be so disruptive, as one thing Elon gets is software. Tesla has been less experienced and quality car production, but they are catching up fast.

  19. Exactly, all this! I think Tesla realised the car just has to be built 'good enough' and drive 'well enough' but that the technology and the interaction points for the customer have to be great. In doing so they have massively disrupted the automotive industry.

If anything I would say the automotive industry is actually loosing it's way... My bosses have all got problems with their Audi E-whatever's, one has returned it. I know Jag/Landrover have had loads of issues with the onboard Multi-Media, it's crazy really.

I have a 2017 Transporter T6 with the inbuilt VW headunit that had Car Play spec'd, it was a silly £700 extra at the time but overall I think it still works better and more reliably than some of the newest inbuilt stuff.

  20. Would it be possible for us to have a vote to see who would be prepared to pay just a bit extra for a screen interface that actually worked. I know one of you tech guys will be able to put a chart on here to do just that and show the Ducati how we actually feel.
