Apple TV

  1. Will the Apple TV play music from an iPad, via a BT Hub, in the same way that an Apple Express can ?

Presumably it will because the Apple TV will mirror the iPad ?

  2. I'm not sure I understand this. The Apple TV will work with an iPad whatever your wifi system. It doesn't have to be an Apple one.

But if you want really good music from an iPad, may I recommend the Bowers and Wilkins A7 speaker which works on wifi (Airplay)? That needs to be heard for you to realise just how good it is. If it's too expensive, the A5 (the smaller brother) is also very good, just not as good. And if that's too expensive, the Z2 is good for the money. The Zeppelin comes in between the A7 and A5 in price terms and quality terms, but the design is a bit marmite - you either love it or aren't so keen.

  3. My main objective is to play music through my TV speakers from my iPad. This can be done via Apple Express audio out. But would an Apple TV provide the same, through HDMI with additional functions (although lack of BBC iPlayer is a big let down).

A separate speaker could be a solution though.

  4. Yes it will, I use an AppleTV connected to my Sony home cinema amp and I use Spotify for all my music via iPad or telly. As long as you have the devices on the same Wi-Fi then you get the icon to do 'Air-Play'.

There are competitive products available ;-) and I don't work for Apple or Spotify haha

  5. You can send anything you like over airplay with Apple TV. Screen mirroring, music, movies, bbc I player.

It all works with a simple button touch.

  6. Hmmm. Bowers and Wilkins - a more stylish version of Sonos ?

  7. Sounds like Apple TV has just won.

  8. If you've already got excellent TV speakers, the Apple TV would be your cheapest option.

What's good with the B&W stuff is that you can just move it from room to room and plug it into a power socket, so you will get music wherever your wifi reaches to. This can be good for working on a bike, perhaps...

  9. Decided to go the whole hog and get an Apple Mini quad core i7 and 1TB hard drive.

Currently downloading OS X Mavericks, it could take some time.

  10. Surely your Mac Mini will be delivered with Mavericks, unless it's second hand.

  11. No it was bought on the highstreet from an approved Apple retailer all in original unopened wrapping.

  12. Eh? your mac mini was provided without an OS?

  13. ALL Macs come with the OS preloaded. You turn the thing on and it asks you a couple of questions (about the language you want etc) and that's it. What are you saying? It doesn't have any software at all? What about all the programmes that come with it?

  14. No, it came with Mountain Lion loaded.

It appears to have been built late 2012 ! All specs are as per the current Apple website.

  15. Then you was robbed, unless they did you a special price. Check on the Apple Store website to see what the current price is. If you paid top dollar, go back and complain. But there are special offers from time to time on old stock. The Mac Mini is seldom bought, so stock rotation will be a lot lower that for laptops or iMacs. Now and again chains here sell off Macs for say CHF 100 less or so than list price. These tend to have an old operating system on them.

You should also check that your Mac has iWork preinstalled. I bet it hasn't, but it should have. That is Numbers, Keynote and Pages which are now delivered free with a new Mac. But if you've got the old operating system, I wouldn't be surprised that your computer doesn't have them. Complain about this too, if necessary. The free iWork happened from about November onwards (when they started shipping Mavericks).

  16. Price was as per current price list. Numbers, Keynote and Pages are a free download.

Mavericks download has slowed to a crawl !

  17. You might have a whole heap of trouble with your mavericks download, with it failing and such. I have found a way to get mine to resume after fail, but it apparently different for everyone that is having the problem. If you have any dramas let me know

  18. I'd go and have a little moan at them for selling you a full price Mac with an obsolete system. The whole point of a Mac is that you don't have to bugger about with it getting it to work. If you'd ordered one over the web you'd have had Mavericks from the off and would be using it by now. If it was a reputable shop, they should either have installed the Mavericks for you FOC from the off, or at least done you a price. I know our shop would. There is no way we would sell a computer with the old operating system on it.

Mavericks is a pretty hefty download and install. It takes a few hours, so don't bother sitting there watching it.

  19. If it fails once, he should just take it back to the shop and tell them to deal with it. It's a new Mac after all.

  20. Mavericks, Numbers, Keynote and Pages successfully installed first time, but the downloads took about 5 hours

Only iMovies and iPhotos to update tomorrow, both are 1GB+ !, then it is fully up to date.

Then I can do what I want to do.

It was irritating to find that the Mini was not loaded with the latest OS, but at least I don't have to return to the store tomorrow.
