April Portsmouth/Santander

  1. .........and then Pyrenees..maybe.
I am looking at 11th April depart and 20th April return.

My question is what to expect of the weather at that time. I know nothing is guaranteed, but any experience and advice for this area and time of year would be much appreciated.

  2. Should see mid 20s c but up by the snow line it will be a lot colder, occasional rain showers but generally not a problem,if it's not good just go elsewhere when you het off the boat,no need to book hotels at that time of year at all,go wherever the sun is,we have done that for years !

  3. The pyrenees tends to have odd climates and the French side can be pouring and cold and the Spanish side lovely or vice versa. I have been is spring and Autumn and they are much the same as in a bit random.

This sept we had temps down to 11 and as high as 32 and that is not unusual. As mentioned you almost have to look at local forecasts and alter your plans on the fly. We have caught the ferry fully expecting to spend the week in the pyrenees and ended up down near Portugal because the Pyrenees is wet and chilly

I always find Portsmouth to santander is a drag at 24 odd hours long. Plymouth - santander at 18 hours is more than enough in a tin can and pretty much after you wake and have brekky and a walk on deck you are there.

  4. Much better weather and roads on the Spanish side,it is south facing.

  5. Look at the weather forecast for the Southwest of England. The weather in the North of Spain is invariably the same in my experience. I go to San Sebastián every year to visit family and if you want better weather I recommend heading down a bit further South at that time of year. Plymouth/Santander is the quicker and easier route.

  6. Mad March winds and April showers the North of Spain's weather is unpredictable, have ridden many times in the pyrenees cold wet and misty or hot and sunny no guarantees . In April it should be around 15 to 18 deg and pretty much like the South of England. I have friends in Bilbao so visit 2 or 3 times a year have been there summer and winter and its pot luck weather wise it could be 20 deg in June and 30 in October. The ferry crossing while its the quickest way to Spain the bay of Biscay can be a nightmare. As has already been said if the weathers crap when you get off the ferry go South.

  7. Thanks all for replies. I think we will do this in summer 2015 as I already have an Alps trip for next year:rolleyes:

  8. Alps is boring and roads overcrowded in comparison to Spanish Pyrenees.

  9. I am sure the Pyrenees are good, just got a cheapish trip already arranged with a few mates in July 2014. We will be in Austria, Switzerland and France so should manage to pick some non-boring bits in the Alps lol:upyeah:

So Pyrenees will get done, just a bit later
