998 Are Ohlins Steering Dampers Worth It

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Wazza, Apr 12, 2015.

  1. Hello are the steering dampers worth the price or are they just bling. I ve put 999 s ohlins front forks on and I would say hell yes well worth the money but I would like to know what I would get form an Ohlins steering damper over the standard
    Thanks

  2. Adjustabilty - whether you need that or not I don't know? I have an Ohlins on mine but in all honesty I never had a problem with the original damper.

One advantage is that the Ohlins is thinner and less likely to scuff your tank if the mount gets wobbly...

  3. I would agree with D.D.Save some money and buy a sticker.:)

  4. I thought my forks were ok until I put Ohlins on and what a difference they make in every way so do I get the damper just to finish her off so Ohlins everywhere like S/R but I would like some improvement is there any

  5. fitted an ohlins to my 748 when i blinged it up for no great reason other than bling if im honest. i did used to get a lil head shake coming out of corners on the gas but it wasnt a prob as such in fact i kinda liked it! but having used the bike aggressively for the first time this weekend (since the rebuild) i did note that it wasnt so twitchy when light in the front but i have changed many thing so i cant say its down to the damper but would guess its the main reason

  6. Adjustable are better than standard, as you can wind them off at the start of the day, then crank them up a bit as the oil gets hot and thin...

P.S. New are expensive (£500 ish); you can get them for half price on eThief if you're prepared to wait

  7. I ve looked on here and Fleebay £250 ish would get me one but my problem is that when I look at other peoples beautiful dukes and see Ohlins front and rear I know they usually have the damper as well will mine look wrong without one

  8. I'd get one. I put one on the 848 as they didn't come as standard back then.
Ohlins kit keeps it's value, so you'll get your money back if you change your mind.
There is one for sale on this site for £120...

  9. £120.00? buy it!!! mine was £250.00 odd (new from the states) plus freight and tax so a lil cheaper than a new one from round these parts but not by much.. was looking for 6 or 7 months for a good nic one and found nadda.. hard to get a good one cheap

  11. id want it anyway as im a flash cunt... :D of course the olhlins is better than the standard unit so yes i would want and buy it should i have the coin.. would it make me faster? probably not... but i would/do feel better knowing that i (arguably) have the best kit

  13. As mentioned adjustability. The stock damper is quite stiff and I use an Ohlins damper on my 998 simply because I can wind it completely off and not have such stiff steering at very low speeds or even when simply manoeuvring the bike.

I would say on the road the stock damper is a bit too much and using an Ohlins damper you can wind it off or up as much or as little as you need to.

It is a costly upgrade though.

I got a Hyperpro fully adjustable steering damper for my 748R engined 748S for £26!! from eBay, just as good as an Ohlins and probably even less than buying a stock damper second hand. It definitely was a bargain and probably no one bid on it simply because it was not an Ohlins.

  14. There are alternatives to Ohlins and as Red998, I use a HyperPro which I am very happy with. Andy

  15. There's someone on this forum selling an 848 Ohlins damper for £190. The new Ohlins do fit 748 - 9*6's and from the photo it should fit your bike.

  16. Looked at that would need mounts as well another £40 so same as feebay

  17. Hyper pro definitely just fitted one to my track bike, half price of ohlins fully adjustable and fully serviceable. Plus it looks great.

  18. i have an ohlins on my bike, but as said the stock one did the job just as good.
but off course the ohlins is much better looking.
i still have one from Toby laying around somewhere, these are very good as well.

    henk!!!

  19. That's the thing all the standard items do the job but Ohlins do it better, had my first proper ride out the other day and I m impressed with the front end I did feel more confident while riding but still 50:50 over the damper

Cool dog I ve got 2 ike & Sky ( sky has 3 legs )
