Are shit. 3rd day into a 1 week trip, and the first time they'd been warn. Left boot started leaking. 2 days later, right boot. It appears that the waterproof coating is a micro thin layer on top of the leather. Scuff that, no more waterproofing FFS. What a shite design.
For proper waterproofing you really need a proper inner layer like Goretex on the inside of the boots. For a get-you-home remedy you could always try some beeswax polished on the outside of your boots, thickly, for the rest of the trip. Or even Chelsea Dubbin if it's available where you are!
sealskin socks, are an easy solution, feet keep dry, all boots will eventually leak after a while, even goretex. or carrier bags if ya tight !
Best boots are the Daytona boots. 5 years 40,000 miles rain and snow and my feet are bone dry and more importantly the boots are still like new.
+1 for the Daytonas. Was at Le Mans last year and my feet would have been dryer if I'd been wearing sponges. Girl friend wears Lady Daytonas that are 8 or 9 years old and not seen a lot of polish but her feet were totally dry. Stumped up the £350 and I've been warm and dry throughout the winter despite rain, snow and -5 C. Andy
All I can say is I once involuntarily tested my Alpinestars Goretex boots. Coming back from a Ducati Riding Experience day at Imola, it rained on me for about 150 miles. When I say it rained, I mean it was like someone standing at the side of the motorway throwing buckets of water at me. I could only navigate in broad daylight by following tail lights - traffic was invisible. After a few hours of this, I couldn't take it any more. I was wearing leathers with what had been a leak-proof one-piece oversuit over them. For the first time in my biking career, the water had got under the oversuit and the leathers and was trickling down my back. The leathers were damp, my helmet was soaked inside (had to ride with visor half open), my gloves were a couple of kilos heavier, even my underpants were damp. In fact, the only bit of me that was dry was my feet, amazingly, thanks to the aforementioned boots. I was convinced.
