Just watched one of lamb chops videos and see that he uses a Knox armoured shirt. Which makes me wonder if that would be better than a jacket for riding in very hot temps. Does anyone on here use one, and would you recommend it?
Here in Hanoi summer temps are 37 to 40 as a rule. I wouldn't wear one of these instead of a jacket. I think these would be great for a jacket with no impact protection or, depending on fit, getting the protection to sit exactly where you want it, which can be a nuisance wit a mesh jacket. By itself I doubt there is any abrasion protection. I also don't think it is what Knox intended. Bohn armor out of the US do similar gear.
I’ve been reading about the Knox Urbane Pro 2, as well as loads of reviews, and apparently the mesh is abrasion resistant, with one bloke reporting a big crash wearing it and nothing else. He said it held up as well if not better than a regular jacket. Anyone here got one?
Popped into Infinity this morning and tried the Urbane utility shirt, as they didn’t have my size of the regular shirt in stock. This one is the same, but has extra pockets. Was very impressed, so also looked at the trousers. Equally impressed, I bought both, came home and went straight out on the bike. Both are extremely comfortable, the armour doesn’t move, and the venting is exceptional. After trying a number of combos over the years, I think this kit could be the holy grail in summer clothing!
The best way is not to fall off. The second best is to wear a jacket in case you fall off. After that, you are into good luck or hospital territory
I was looking at these online the other day, with the usual reservations about abrasion resistance.Been too hot for more than short blasts for the last 6 weeks. Pity for anyone touring here at the moment in this. Very interested in more about these shirts..
According to the guy at Infinity, it has a 5 second slide resistance. As long as you connect the trousers to the top.
I wear an Oxford shirt. I put my own Ghost CE2 armour in it. Feels a lot more exposed than a jacket but you get used to the feeling. Comfort in the heat is great and I'm now teaming it with a Macna evaporative cooling vest underneath it.
I bought a Knox Urbane Pro shirt last year for use on hot summer days. A lot cooler on than leathers but also less protection too. Normally wear a t-shirt underneath and a pair of armoured denim jeans. My only negative is that to attach the shirt to jeans you need to thread a belt through the hoops in your jeans and the hoops in the shirt, a bit fiddly.
Will let you know when I've used it. It only arrived on Friday and I haven't been out since. A friend of mine has one and swears by it. He says 2-3 days for a refill.
Is yours the Urbane Pro or Pro 2? Apparently they’ve improved the slide time and protection on the 2.
I saw a guy yesterday wearing his (loose) shoulder, elbow and back armour over his long sleeved T shirt. I couldn’t help thinking that should he come off then when any part of it gripped the tarmac that it’d simply move and/or be ripped off exposing him to more trauma potential.
Loose armour is a waste of time. It’s only since trying this stuff yesterday that I’ve realised how ineffective the armour would be in a lot of bike clothing, should the worst happen.
Sounds good. At the end of the day, nothing will match leathers for protection, but equally if you're riding round sweating your nuts off, that can be even more dangerous.
i wear the knox urbane pro and the matching trousers most of the ridding summer unless v nippy. awesome kit. just sling a dainese d-air vest over the top (means can ditch the knox back protector too) and I'm sorted
