Hi all, got an old scala intercom that' given up the ghost. It's quite old so expected but I need a replacement. Don't mind cost unless silly but has anyone got anything that works with a 660 and provides good audio for music and conversation around 80mph? Also needs to talk to an iPhone 6, Cheers, Ian
Sena 20s; but frankly i wire my music from the 660 & use the ear-phones from the kit sena provide to overlay phone conversations. But it is tough at 80mph i must say'
Just made the transition from Autocom to a Sena 10U system that fits perfectly into my Shoei GT Air, just as well as it was designed to. They make them to fit other lids as well. Phone audio through the Zumo 660 has always been pretty poor and despite being able to see who's calling and dialing from the phonebook using the screen of the Garmin a separate BT connection for the phone gives much better quality. As I only want the phone hooked up for emergency incoming calls, I'll stop if I want to make one (far safer that way), connecting directly to the 2nd phone channel of the 10U with the Garmin connected to Ch#1 works well in testing. Yet to try it on the bike though. Hopefully will have time to test this coming weekend. The Autocom setup has worked flawlessly for 4 years TBH but decided wire free and cross bike portability is the way forward. Sena SR10 PMR adapter arrives tomorrow.
Ok, please let us know how you get on with the sena. I'm more interested in music than the phone - agree that's only emergencies. Haven't seen or heard of any system that is simple and effective across music and intercom at speed yet though.
I have 10u and agree with Bumpkin, if you want quality music I'd go for in ear monitors like the shure SE 535's they're astonishing
Will report back once I've tried it in the real world rather than in my living room. As Nigel says, in ear monitors are best for higher fidelity sound. However, personally I don't like them as they are too isolating. With the autocom I took a lot of care positioning the speakers, central over my ear canal and as close as comfortably possible, just 'kissing' my ears. Could hear music to silly speeds and converse with fellow riders via PMR. Obviously wind noise did start to intrude at motorway speed and made things difficult to hear at autobahn speeds. In short, speaker position is critical. With the Sena 10U the speaker positions are set by the way that they mount into the helmet. Position seems quite good although they could be a little closer to my ears. I wear earplugs without fail. Volume seems good despite plugs without having to turn it up too far. Of course this is static thus far, wind noise will make a big difference. My Autocom had a background noise mic that ramped the volume accordingly, worked brilliantly, not sure if the Sena has similar.
I wired a female socket onto the in-ear speakers on my interphone F4 - I then use ultimateEar mounded plugs with speakers - no issues with calls and music at 80 Can use the in helmet speakers if just pottering about
That sounds interesting- any chance of some pics? The UE units are very expensive and need a mould of the ear to be custom fit? Which model do you use and did you buy in the UK?
Well I can grab a pic of the UE's connected to the female jack hanging out the helmet, but I didn't take pics during the soldering process The speaker wires (both channels) go from the interphone go to the left in ear helmet speaker - peeling off the foam and some insulation I was able identify l and r an +\- . I used a 3.5mm male to female ext lead and cut to length to exit just on the left hanging down by 2 or 3 inches I just checked the UE site - where I purchased from -,the soundear is the one I purchased I believe - don't think the 1.5 was an option at the time ... Yes - expensive , but had mine for a couple of years now and they're as new - as long as you don't lose them , they should be good for years - I use them also for air travel - cuts out the racket Yep , need to get moulds , but UE suggest local auroligists - usually opticians that also do hearing aids They take the moulds - strange feeling btw- and then send off to UE - I had a good experience and would recommend
I've just replaced my old scala with a scala cardo Q1 Teamset (for the wife). I've put the optional extra 40mm speakers in my lid and WOW! Music is fantastic through them and i've figured out all the buttons now. Works with my iPhone 6 plus and siri works too so I can get it to do things on the fly using speech. I also picked them up for £160 brand new.
I bought the dual Sena 20s and it really is a quality bit of kit! I have my Garmin 590, phone and headsets connected through the Ducati multimedia system and they all sink great! Headphone speakers are really good quality (listen to my Spotify on the go at er 70! :/) phone calls are clear as, better half say the quality of call on bike is better than from my car! (go figure) Yes the 20s is pricey but the quality and function is excellent!! cheapest place I found for the kit was sportsbikeshop.co.uk great service as well.....
Just noticed something my Scala Q1 does that surprised me. My iPhone knows the unit's battery level. Top marks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
