Hi, Ok I expect delivery of my 2010 Multistrada 1200 S sometime next week. My question is, because I bought from a dealer I never got to speak to the 1 previous owner and since it's 10 yrs old there is a fair possibility that they have carried out the most common mods. what should I be looking for? Also I have read about lumpyness at low revs and I know there are fix's. I live in Lincolnshire where there is some great riding but equally there are a lot of villages where I'm going to have to ride through at 30mph. Any advise is much appreciated while sitting here like a kid waiting for Christmas
Where in Lincs are you? There are quite a few of us similarly afflicted with Italian money-pits. If you bought it from Italia or V-Duo then both shops are highly experienced and competent and trustworthy.
Ah shall keep an eye out then, we are just near Market Rasen. I say “money pit” with my tongue in my cheek. Ducati are actually pretty reliable in my experience if well maintained.
I guessed that. I have read that they have been much better recently. I had a nice little TDM 900 but it was a bugger surging so I'm trying get a heads up
Ok, so what about the mods? I have read about some anti surging mods and some gadget in the exhaust that people remove. Forgive me, it's a completely new bike to me, these mods may have already been done.
I had no surging problems during 45k miles of ownership. The exhaust flap valve, near the rh footrest can be prone to seizing up with road shit if linkage isnt cleaned and lubricated regularly. Some folk just remove the valve internals or wire it open. From what I remember, if you want to mess with the valve, then you will need to install a small electrical gubbins to prevent a dash fault.
That’s what I want to hear. I’ll way up the pros and cons. normally I like to keep a bike how it was designed which isn’t always how we buy them.
Great bike, the lumpiness at slow speeds you mention is what I call character. These bikes should avoid being ridden with less than 3000rpm, 2nd gear for urban 30mph and you won’t have lumpiness, why people complain about lumpiness and ride at 2000 rpm still puzzles me. Generally a very reliable bike and I imagine any gremlins yours might have had a now history. Got 40,000 miles on mine and still makes me smile which is why it’s a keeper.
There is no fix for low rpm lumpiness.its a big cc v twin and that is how it is. Keep the revs up and you'll learn how to live with it.
I would suggest you get yourself a set of quality front and rear paddock stands. These will facilitate regular servicing and cleaning. They will also pay for themselves in two sets of tire changes.
No Back brake.... "they are all like that sir"... Look up ABS bleed mod. Know and change the "lost the key" code.
If riding over the winter months protect with acf50, if the bike is corrosion free then it has been well looked after, get a 55mm socket and breaker bar and good high load torque wrench, no idea what exhaust you have on it but dont expect a end can to up the db as end cans are pretty much for looks only, rear crud catcher looks shit but is fit for purpose is riding in the wet, clutch bleeding is regular maintenance, expensive valve service due every 15000 miles and belt service due every 5 years or 15k both expensive, if you have a s model the ohlins scu is a worthwhile upgrade
