1200 Enduro Axle Clamp Bolts

  1. Ugh, '16 Enduro, all I'm doing is changing the brake discs, perfectly capable of that except one of the stupid axle clamp bolts is damaged (not by me) so the hex bit isn't turning it ...

    Thoughts welcome while I can still put it back together and take it to someone with more serious tools.

  2. I usually hammer in the biggest torx bit I can get to fit and then undo with a rachet. Destroys the bolt head but you won’t be using it again once it’s out.

  3. Thanks, yeah just wary of making it worse to the point I can't ride it somewhere to get it sorted ...
     
  4. Probably best to take it to someone then if your not sure about being able to get it out.

  6. Thank you, will look into the left hand drill bits.

    Thought the actual bolts were thin head ones but will check again.
     
  7. Please do check - got these from my Amazon history but there is a thread in here somewhere where the right dimensions are provided (I think by Nelly of Cornerspeed) and conf they are not “special parts” - I chuck em when I change em now, just in case.

  8. Will do, I have a local bolt shop so if I don't have anything the same I'll nip down there and see if they can match them. I'm sure they will if they're standard bolts and there's no way I'm going to reuse the originals!

  9. Confirmed, a standard size bolt fits in the hole. The Ducati ones are definitely slim head ones though but a standard bolt will be better (for getting out again) I'm sure.

  10. Update: so I had a go with a few suggestions on here and Facebook but it's not budging at the moment so I've booked it in at the local trusted bike shop. They'll have better tools than me. So frustrating to be stopped by a stupid cheesy screw.

    I didn't hammer a Torx bit in (yet) that's probably the way but I'll just mangle it worse than it is and probably snap the head off ...

    Might have another go at it, bike shop can't look at it before the 20th.
     
  11. Make sure the other pinch bolt is fully tightened before trying to extract the dodgy one, it will take some pressure off it and make it easier to loosen, hope that makes sense!

  12. Agree but don’t be tempted to overtighten the other bolt as some forks have been known to crack due to clamp bolts being overtorqued.

  13. Exactly, and if it does start to loosen, only slightly loosen each in turn.

  14. Thanks, I've given up on it before I make things worse, think it'll need drilling and extracting. I could try that but that's gone wrong for me in the past and I promised the chap I took it to not to try that again!

  15. The bolt is out (a few days ago) bike shop couldn't do it before the 20th so took it to my trusted local engineering chap who got it with the Torx bit method. Happy to pay him the 20 quid for his time. Cheaper and quicker than the bike shop would have been I'm sure.

  16. New discs are on at last, pretty aggressive thread lock on the disc bolts but I got them out (had to buy some new Torx bits as my 30 year old Halfords kit was pretty knackered). Replaced the disc bolts with fancy titanium hex bolts (very expensive) but I've been on it today and nothing's fallen off yet.
