I just read with horror the post where a Panigale was 'forbidden' the joys of Oulton with a standard exhaust. So thought I'd start a thread re baffles for us track day folk that gives solutions to getting our bikes past the noise police. On e-bay there are tons of baffles of all shapes and sizes! So to get the ball rolling. My 998 has a full termi system but no 'killers.' There are no holes for grub screws so technical advise on drilling chromed steel will be useful? What should I buy and how do I fit them? PS I have escaped the noise police but it seems the goalposts move so a set of baffles in the tool box would be a good idea. (Head ruling the heart) PSS I have heard that open dry clutches can influence the readings so people keep the clutch pulled in?
I did a trackday last year where a bog standard, brand new R6 failed yet my Mille R with a 65mm open pipe passed!!! Work that bugger out.
Minyo - there are loads of baffles available for the 998 - around £25. They are easy to fit, and the end caps on termi cans are real easy to drill for the retaining screw. My 998 has never failed a noise test even at Oulton... on average it tests 102/103Db and although i've got some Db killers I've never had to use them. The feeling with the panigale was that the Scroteneer was testing it wrong has he had the probe litterally shoved up the outlet of the cans - and he wouldn't be told otherwise.
Hello 998gsb Tah can you point me and others at your source of baffles please i.e. a link to the ones you'd recommend on e-bay or wherever. I have never failed the test at Oulton but I thought I'd start this thread as there are a lot of unhappy folk out of pocket. "Scroteneer" ha ha ha brill
search ebay: decibel killers ducati........dB killers ducati......... baffles ducati......................... rocket science
Let's not be too hard on the scrutineers at race/trackdays. Some poor bugger has been given the thankless task of carrying out the damn silly noise tests which have been legally imposed on that circuit, and he has a tough job to do. If he lets too loud bikes through, it could affect the viability of the whole circuit. He has an aggravating enough job as it is, without the riders wrangling about it and trying to bend the limits. OK, the whole subject is aggravating to us all - but falling out with scrutineers won't help very much.
Does nobody use a washer welded to a bolt anymore? Lot cheaper than a db killer and 'tunable' in so much as you can turn to the angle that just gets you through....
At Mallory today, my 1000ss which had Sparx GPR silencers (with baffles), failed at 107 dba. The engine was cold, so the guy sent me off to warm her up. Scraped in at 104 dba! Two guys on 996s had same problem. He put the probe at the opening of one of the twin silencers, and told me to rev it 7,000. Is this usual for a V twin? Are there testing conventions/guidelines? Two weeks ago with a Daytona they asked for 6,000 revs. Bit puzzled. Don't think the SS will do for the track anymore, with the GPRs :-(
5k for your bike (large twin), testers are all over the place and bearing in mind they do it all the time out think held know *rollseyes* And some are total arseholes with a small man complex desperate to wave their 3 inches in some big blokes face
Thanks Bradders. Did find a post that details ACU guidance, that stipulates 5k for twins. Funnily enough FE have commented that they test to these standards. Not today though! Will take it up with them. (and look at quieter system!)
4,500 at the ring and mine still failed . Must remember decibel killers next time . Or I could just wait five minutes and try again ? he looked away that time.
I've definitely noticed this, was borderline at Brands (102)with an open clutch, weeks later measured 99 with closed, also at Brands.
