Balaclava under helmet?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by P.neto7, Mar 12, 2013.

  1. Does anyone uses a balaclava under the helmet? I have slight longer hair and I am used to using it during my karting days as it makes it so much easier to put helmet on and doesn't let any sweat come into eyes.

For the long hair motorcyclists out there any feedback?

  2. Hi Pedro,
Are you not interested in the replies of short haired motorcyclists too? You`d better rephrase the question or they will be forming self help groups, complaining about short hairism and saying you have infringed their human rights!
And what about baldies who want warm heads in the winter? look what you have started now.

  3. If you took you lid off when re-fuelling, the attendant would reach straight for the robbery hotline lol

  4. Anyone that has used it is welcome to post. I have only used helmets mostly on racetrack so I just wondered if actually people use it on the road sometimes? For me, bar being a bit hot, makes all the sense to wear one, particularly with longer hair.

Thanks in advance for any replies

  5. I used to use a balaclava in my youth, but it had nothing to do with long hair as mines always been short! I now have an Oxford neck warmer ( thanks secret Santa ) which is much warmer than the buff I used before! The balaclava was great back then as the helmets I used were a bit breezier and not as snug fitting as modern ones.

  6. I use one in the coldest weather. Buzz cut grade 0 or 1 usually, in terms of current hairstyle - thanks for asking!

I find it very helpful, in that it keeps my head from freezing solid. :upyeah:

  7. From a slaphead, I only use the Back Lava when its really cold and there is a frost etc. Normally I just use a Buff (insert joke here). The balaclava does indeed keep my head and neck warmer, but as is to be expected makes the helmet a little tighter and makes turning the head a little harder. Anything that helps keep you warm on a bike in the winter is well worth it in my opinion. One less thing to worry about

  8. I only used one for the first time last year as I think it came free with a bike magazine. Certainly keeps the head warmer, one major + point I noticed was that it significantly reduced the wind noise from my noisy Arai Chaser helmet.

  9. I have long hair and I sometimes use a silk balaclava underhelmet, but I have never thought there was any connection. Bala is good in extremely cold weather, long rides in frost and snow. A thick bala is no good, too uncomfortable on the forehead, so needs to be fine and thin.

  10. I used to use one in winter but the combination of large nose and constant drip flow tended to make it damp cold and not entirely pleasant to wear. i am olderand wiser now so just stick earplugs up the nostrils.

  11. I wet shave my head, better look than the big comb over and i have to wear one to stop my arai moving around on my head,i am not to sure on the content of this thread to many heads and helmets for my liking.

  12. Good opinions here. Makes sense when it's cold. I just asked as at least for me it will make sense, easier to put helmet on and off and I am used to it anyway. For me just makes the helmet fit perfectly.

Anyway thank you very much for replies.

  13. When really cold I have used a bac lava.

  14. Under about 14°, balaclava keeps you snug. Over that temperature, not really necessary.

I also use the snug-making Foggy neoprene mask at beginning and end of season. Prevents visor misting up and keeps your face warmer. When it gets over about 22° this is uncomfortably warm, so I swap out to the Arai which is like wearing a wind-tunnel.

  15. I use a silk balaclava. It's not a scary bank job style. More F1 style. I use it mainly so my hair doesn't go too wonky by the time I get to work.

  16. It is :upyeah:

  17. I use o a thickish windcheater type in winter then during spring / autumn I use a thin silky type one, summer is commando stylee !
