Basic Satnav Recommendations - For A Car.

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Andy Bee, Apr 13, 2024.

  1. I'm being dragged kicking and screaming away from me AA road atlas of 2008 and am thinking of getting a Satnav - only for use in the car and not intended to be used abroad either.

Not looking for anything that is all singing & dancing just a solid, basic, easy to use without a 3 year built in obsolescence.

  2. Just use the one on your phone?

  3. I have an old one I can sell you for a bargain price. It was my daughters before she got her new car which had one built in.
Just need to double check it fires up and the maps are ok

  5. I had thought of that but was wondering what other options are available.... and as it turns out one of the options was a pretty good offer.

  6. I have found Waze on my phone the best so far
    Let's you know hazards etc
Even I can follow it without looking at phone

  7. I use my phone as it does calculate around traffic snarl ups.
My issue with SatNavs is they don’t live update as you drive for a quicker route.

  10. (I don't find Waze as easy to play with as Gmaps, and it always seems to differ with Gmaps re the best route, which nonplusses me, but drivers so often recommend it that I can see I ought to persist.)

  11. A bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut but i replaced the whole head unit in both my cars for android headunits...amazing...did my car and was so impressed i did the wifes car as well...

  12. Android & Ubuntu both... :upyeah:

  13. Not sure Ubuntu would be a good thing on a car head unit!! :)

  14. You already do by subscribing :)

  19. Gawd, had a right old game trying to update the maps on the Garmin cus my PC runs Ubuntu. For some reason there is no linux package that can talk to Garmin products. There is only Windows & Mac support. So I tried:
    • Running Garmin Express in a wine environment. Failed to connect.
    • Created & ran Garmin Express in a Windows 10 virtual machine. Failed to connect.
    • Spent days trying to get the Windows VM to see the host machines USB. Hurrah! Garmin Express connected.
    • Garmin Express couldn't update the maps because 'your computer did not have enough memory'
    • Spent days increasing the Windows VM C drive capacity.
    • Garmin Express connected & updated the maps. And thrice I say hurrah
And in all the time I spent googling my way through the above I got the distinct impression that Garmin Express can be as flaky as. In my travails I somehow managed to lose all the maps on the device and even now have to remove an Express directory between instances of firing it up.

Hey ho, we're all happy now and I just need somewhere to go.. :)

  20. Glad you got it sorted out, sounds a right PIA. I agree Garmin don’t really spend much money on their ‘software’. I think they just want you to change the sat nav every few years.

I bought an ‘official’ set of N America maps on a SD card for a couple of holidays a few years ago. We are off there again this year so I popped it in the Zumo and it told me the maps were corrupted. I sent an email to Garmin and they took 2 weeks to respond and want the original receipt and where I bought it from 10 years ago!

I can’t remember where I bought it, probably eBay, but it’s in the genuine packaging with the serial number. I’ll search my eBay history but it’s unlikely I’ll find it. I’m not bothered about updates just want the original maps to work.

I have found a sort of work round by using an open source map but it limits what you can do.

Now going to try and use MRA with offline maps to avoid big data costs.
