1098 Battery And Leads

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by bigjimmyb, Mar 9, 2022.

  1. Hi all,

    Bit of advice needed...

Is it possible to use an Li battery on a 1098? And are there any leads recommended to help the bugger with cold starts?

    Are these any good?

  2. Hi many have done this. Those leads will work and you should upgrade the R&R to a Mosfet one. Loads have done it on here. :upyeah:

  3. What Ian said with the emphasis on, you must change the regulator to the later type, I thinl 2010 onwards. Failure of the old regulator would put the full alternator output into the battery which would, as a minimum, catch fire. The later regulator, often just referred to as the Mosfet, fails to ground. 4. I can only comment on the cables, which are good quality from an ex-member of this Parish.

The only thing to note about them is that they are designed to 'Piggy back' the original cables, they are not designed to completely replace them.
The reason for this is that where for example your existing -ve battery terminal may have several additional small cables coming off it as well as the main cable, the new ones will not.
When I used a set I cut away the original corroded main cables and just piggy backed the old terminal and small leads on top of the new cable terminals.
The new cable is far more able to handle the current than the originals, so it doesn't matter that the old cables are not in place.

I have my own crimping tool etc to make my own cables, but used a set of these during lockdown as I couldn't source some cable.
I'd say they are well worth the cost if you can't make the cables yourself.

  5. This would do…
Then you’d just need the Triumph link cable.

  6. I would source a used Reg Rectifier as a lot of the the ‘New’ China made ones are just Shunt ones made with the correct connectors. Triumph are a good source and also the Kawasaki ZX10R.
Triumph do a wiring harness that allows connection to Ducatis with just the addition of a cable tie to keep one of the connectors held together. The part number is T2500676. These could be had for £10 when we started doing the mod but are now over £20.

  7. Thank you Chris and all for your advice.

  8. Thanks Sev and all for your replies.

  9. As a follow up, I'm going to start with the Exact cable kit and see if that improves starting. From what I've read and vids I've seen with similar kits in the US (good ole YouTube), it looks as though that would be best bang for my buck in the first instance.
I need to ask do they Exact cables come with instructions, I'm hopeless at anything like this but if it's relatively simple, I'll have a crack.
    Thanks again

  10. Yes they do, however, because they piggy back the original cables instead of replacing them, it's a bitch of a job. Andy

  11. Thanks Andy - I wanted you to say 'yeah mate, easy peasy'!

Enlighten me please....in what way is it a bitch? Fiddly or just time-consuming, or both?

    TIA

  12. I fitted a set of Exact cables to my 1098R and what you have to do, is fit a much better quality (thicker and stiffer) cables alongside the original cables. Restricted access and space but doable because I did it. Just frustrating moving bits, taking bits off and then refitting the bits. Did the business though, no issues starting afterwards. Andy

  13. Your last sentence refers to the result I'm after. I've got myself a bit bummed out about the bike and starting issues, thinking I'll just sell her on, but spent a few days (when I've been feeling well enough as I have Covid) doing a deeper clean and polish and she's a freaking peach. I've put about 2k into it in 18 months of ownership (including a desmo) and am thinking if £90 and some tinkering gets me some reliability, she's a keeper.
I'll order the leads now and let you know how it goes.
    Thanks Andy
