Howdo!!! Thought I would grace the forum with me first Thread Because I've altered the bike a little bit I'm running the battery under the seat. The bike previously had a Odyssey PC310 (Overall a very good battery - however with small insert threads to connect your loom). I then saw a Ballistic 12 cell advertised and thought I would give it a go, I had intended in tidying the rear fnarr fnarr. The battery tray was just knocked up outta stainless so not really in line with weight conservation! So ordered a Ballistic from the states, very light and quite well made with proper battery terminals. About half the weight of the PC310. So this then led to the good idea club............lets make a new battery tray! Outta carbon how hard can it be? Ordered a mould & laminating kit from Carbon Fibre Supplies, Carbon Fiber Sheet and High Performance Carbon Fibre Products - Carbon Mods First up I used a bit 4x3 to use as my template for the mould. Then applied clay around the edges, waxed and coated in PVA. Once set I applied the Gel coat. I then applied the fibourous material that comes in the kit. Left to set..............then couldn't get the bloody wooden template out Several hours of knocking the crap outta it 1 mould!!! This was then followed my more hair pulling as I glued strands of carbon fibre all round the kitchen Managed to get some in the mould, however not happy so thought this would be Mk1 (As per the wood lol) Mk2 I used some pre-resined carbon which was easier to use but doesn't get in the corners so well. By this time I was threaders but fairly happy. This then followed even more mess as I sacrificed the mould to get the tray out. Few air pockets, not enough resin but as its not really for show more function - happy. Just in the process of finishing of and fitting to the rear tray more pics soooooooon. Cheers Pablo
That is light! I've got a PC310, really lovely little battery compared to the stock lump. Let's see some pics of the finished tray then!
Got to say I have the same battery Pablo, took ages to get from the States due to customs but still cheaper than buying the same type of batt in the UK at the moment. Fits in my Multistrada a treat and needs less prodding to get the Mutley turned over. I can recommend to anyone thinking of upgrading their battery. No maintenance and no optimiser required so save a little bit on forking out for that.
Howdo!!! Yep V.light Nick! With big cranking power. I also got the Ballistic charger as I've heard issues with the Lifepo4 batteries, this charger balances the cells (Comes with a specific lead that connects to the centre of the battery, I have a connector from Maplins which I intend to wire in and connect to the battery. Means I don't have to muck about taking the seat off to charge, also my crankcase breather expansion tank is in the seat). View attachment 385 Here's a pic of the fibre lump! There's a mould in there some where. View attachment 384 Pic of the Mk1. God rest her soul. Cheers Pablo
I've just put a Motobat YB16 on mine, plus some heavy cables (batt to earth & solenoid and solenoid to starter). Battery weighs a ton but the leads look serious. Result? Either my shiney JE hi-comps have already got holes in 'em or the battery/lead combination has doubled my cranking power. In an uncharacteristic display of optimism I am choosing to believe the latter.
Howdo!!! £110 via flea bay................................... horrendous price! But never selling the bike and I want to finish what I set out to achieve, lighter, user friendly, keeping the soul, keeping the looks, more powerful, more reliable, best handling beast to hunt everything!!!!! Hahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahah!!!!! Oh and got collared by customs the B£%$£!"$s, however with the charger asked them to send as a gift and no charge??? Cheers Pablo
Howdo!!! Here's a pic of my swiss cheese number plate holder. Square section for me battery tray. The reason I cut down the sides and trimmed the front was to allow the cabling around the crankcase breather hoses, looks slightly better but also that few grams lighter!!!!!!! Pic of the number plate holder, carbon tray and Ballistic. Head on view from underneath. View attachment 398 In truth rushed the overall finish of the tray, polish residue, excess resin, missing resin Will get the wet n dry and try for a better finish.......maybe over the winter Cheers Pablo
Howdo!! Weighed the numberplate holder with battery at 2160grams, the old unit weighed 1570grams + PC310 (Need to weigh but web states 2.7kg) = 4270grams. This months diet 2110grams........which is nice Cheers Pablo
Ahoy me old china ..... ....next time the Hyper Lite is back in one piece why don't you come up to the Principality and I'll give you a tour of my favorite roads? I reckon my local knowledge should just about even things up ........
Howdo! Always up for a blast. Be nice to see how the bike compares against another SS/Superlight, see if its just been a waste of money Pablo
Excellent, something to look forward to. Dunno if you've still got my number but I see that there's a pm facility on this site. You're very welcome to the spare room anytime ...... give me a few weeks to run in the pistons and remember how to ride the thing first, mind. As I recall (it's been over 2 years!) it's a bit faster than a Deauville ....... then again, can it be so different? Cheers Grunt
Howdo!!! Well finished me battery tray, had to alter some wiring and had to run some on top of the frame (Even though you can't see it with the bodywork on, I kinda like it when the bike is in it's birthday suit you can't see the wiring.....I hate wires look so untidy!!! But gotta have function and with the crankcase hoses connecting to the seat I'm kinda limited). Also made a lead to the battery to allow me to balance charge the battery, will knock up a fly lead that will just plug in so no taking the bike apart to charge the battery. The PCIII will be removed when I re-map the bike, so only just tie wrapped out the way. Also need a black battery terminal cover somebody's eat mine! That bit closer to weight goal!! Cheers Pablo
Hi, Impressive good to see someone creative. If you are the same chap we spoke a bit on Ducasti and i bought a rear shock off you. Cheers Pepsi
Hey Fish head thats nae too bad! exactly the same as what I intend doing with the Cheeky Czech chicks bike...except she has a PC 310 for hers..may one enquire as to the nature of them there two mahoosive pipes? are they an exhaust system for the Caterpiller marine diesel that you have installed on your shed whilst telling everyone its a gas flowed and ported ST3 engine? I gelcoated and mould putty-ed up my clutch cover last night...mmm... dont think it will be a success myself! might have to do a MkII version like your battery mould!
PS. dont know why you bothered with that heavy plastic mudguard/number plate holder... you should have got a carbon one like moi!
Right Thread Hijack proceeding! I made a carbon battery holder for the original battery, from a NASCAR carbon electrics tray fron Fleabay. However just recently bought Oddysey PC310's for all of our bikes (because a certain piratey chap named Pabbers..recommended them..and now he has gone and changed his...doh!!!) so need new battery boxes. Made another one from another NASCAR carbon electrics tray...bought three of them on fleabay!... but am not too happy with it... (so this will go on the Czech chicks bike)..finally last night I made a third battery box...well a tray really from .....yes a Nascar electrics tray... well an ECU holder actually. Just need to tidy this up and fit brackets and Bob's your Aunt's live in lover! So I have the original sized one...anyone want it for their bike?
