749 Been A Bit Stupid - Need A Brake Caliper

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by RickyX, May 18, 2020.

  1. Over the winter, I fitted new TSS rearsets to my 749R, including billet brake and gear levers.

Went for my first ride of the year today (shock horror...NOT to Box Hill!).
On the way home after about 40 miles I felt the bike behaving strangely, like it was being held back or a fuel starvation type effect.
After a few more miles, the problem abated and in the end went away completely.

This is what I found when I parked up...

Molten metal on the rear wheel

Quick whip off of the caliper revealed a completely melted piston (black squashed thing) and pads worn to metal

Somebody (no names mentioned...me) forgot to check that the brake wasn’t dragging when fitting the spangly billet lever...DOH!

Wanted - 749/999 rear brake caliper please.
    (I have a spare disc)

  2. You need to give a little extra free play on the rod.

I remember @ducati dad had it with his 6R.

Who says 749R's are under powered?

  7. Swap you for that 9*6 rear light assembly I promised you?

I may arrange a trip over later this week to drop off/collect?

  8. If you were paying attention, you would remember that I have a Riders Racing bracket that I intend to use when I get my chain adjusters returned from reverse-engineering.com.
No point in the 4 piston caliper as the rear brake is just for MOT’s...however, possibly excellent for skids when arriving at Box Hill...

  11. I would just like to add finally in my drunken state, I think it was extremely charitable of you to post up this revelation R, I can think of many people who would’ve kept the story quiet, never to see the light of day wink wink

  12. of course I don't know but heavily suspect caliper body could be distorted wouldn't you? I have "done" a few on various as probably have you, and even the steel car ones were too distorted sometimes.

  14. Dropped in to @Sev ’s yesterday bearing gifts of 916 rear light in exchange for a lovely rear caliper..big up to Sev!

Took a good look at my wheel and the bastard molten metal has left marks in the finish. Looks like I need it decorated at some point.
    Added to list...

    Edit: autocorrect recoated = decorated!
