Although okay during normal riding, during spirited road riding my workhorse Zx7R has started jumping out of 2nd gear. Its only done it a few times and doesn't do it everytime, but this problem isnt going to go away and is only going to get worse :frown::frown: The bike is worth probably 1k if im lucky which leaves me with a dilemma. Do I try to get this fixed (expensive), buy another engine - which could even be a Zx9R engine  or get rid of the bike. I dont really have the facilities to get the engine out of the frame myself, but Im fairly sure that I could fix it myself given a little guidance and time if I did. Its worth noting the rear shock is getting tired as well, which is just more expense :frown: Any suggestions?
It sounds like your dear old bus has come to the end of it's usefull/economic life. Strip it and put the bits on the Bay of E !
Well I'm not Kwak expert but it sounds like the selector forks are either knackered or need adjusting, my old R1 race bike used to jump out of gear every now and again and I recall it was an engine out upside down affair and going to be quite expensive if they were knackered. If the rest of the bike is in good nick I'd probably fix it and as it doesn't owe you anything now I guess.
9R motor, rebuild the shock or drop a Nitron in. Helped a mate of mine do the engine swap on his...unfortunately he subsequently got caught out by the increased costs (and not being able to get his act together) so he sold it before it was truly finished.
I pulled a ZX9-r engine in a friends single garage - aside from the weight of the beast its not that bad a job. (very similar frame, and virtually identical engine) the only special tool needed was the one to back off the right hand rear engine mount - you simply will not get it back in without it. Its not a big deal, you can make one from a socket (27 or 30mm from memory) and an angle grinder, the Haynes manual even shows you how. Watch the water tube behind the exhaust headers - use new o rings and insert carefully with plenty of silicone grease (or a smear of RVT) on them, because if it leaks you need to pull the exhaust again to get to it. If I had a little more space I'd make you an offer for it, and do the ZX9R swap myself.. Looking at your location its not impossible for me to swing over one weekend and assist with the swap if you get another engine...
Thats a very kind offer and i'll see where I stand soon. In fact thanks to everybody for their help and advice. I'll just have to see what happens :frown:
I used to have a 9R E1 - the motor was fantastic, and went on to do loads of miles. If you could do it I think you'd be chuffed to bits with the end result.
