Hi Guys. Well I found a lovely Black Multistrada with extra's and have agreed a price, comes with service history, but belts were last done just over 5000 Miles ago? what is the life of the belts? in other words do they need doing NOW seller states its just had a full service (but not the belts) Thanks
Oh and the seller (dealer) also told me that they have checked the cam belt and there are no cracks and it seems perfect?
Yep, the dealership I bought my bike from are doing a full service including belts, it has 5,900 miles on the clock. But they are replacing the belts as the bike is now 2 years and 1 month old... I didn't have to ask them to do that either... So if your bike is either on the required mileage for a belt change, or older than 2 years since the last belts... Then yes. They should be replaced.
From what I have read so far, the 2 year is just a recommendation from Ducati? what about the millage between belt changes? there has been almost 6000 since the last one so I am assuming even if it was done 6 months ago that the belts need changing again due to the 6000 miles since last ones?
It's every 15,000 miles if I'm correct? Belts and valves are done on that service. So no, the belts should be fine then. No need for new ones if they are 6 months old and 6k miles on them.
Well the seller has told me they were done at 9000 Miles, its now done almost 15000 Miles, so if they were done at 9000 Miles not the 15000 Miles recommended, then can I assume they wont need doing again until 24000 Miles (or within 2 years of the 9000) Or did I miss something?
I would ring a Ducati garage mate and ask. Speak to someone at Moto Rapido, they normally dish out free advice without a fuss. Speak to the workshop.
I don't think it can still be every 2 years on the 1200. Mine has been maintained from new by W M Snells and it is having its first set of replacement belts at the next service (15,000 miles). It's just over 3 years old, so the posts about changing them every 2 years may be based on earlier models? I don't know why they would have been done at 9K miles, because even the earliest 1200s can only be coming up for 4 years old. I guess if the dealer is doing it at their expense on a bike they are about to sell then it's not a problem to do them early, but if I was paying to have it done I'd be asking the question about what the actual service schedule requires...
I'd want to see the service invoice detailing that the belts have been done. If they have, then you're fine up to 24K miles, but if they haven't you're looking at a hefty bill for the imminent 15K service.
From the Scheduled Maintenance Chart for the MTS 1200. Change Timing Belts: - At 15,000 mile intervals or at Time (months) 60. I would ask to see the Service Booklet to clear this up. At 15,000 the bike is due its first belt change. No idea why it might have been done at 9,000 - a waste of time and money. However, if it was done the clock starts at that point and the next belt change would be due at 24,000 miles or five years from the date it was last carried out. I would want positive proof of the work otherwise insist they fit new belts before delivery.
