1198 Belt Tensioner - Bearing Replacement?

  1. Hi,

Noticed my belt tensioner is weeping a little grease, but tensioners seem to be £90 each from Ducati

Can you just change the bearing within the tensioner?

Kit on Ebay advertised as 2 belts/ 4 SKF bearings for £120 all in? Seems good to be true?

    Thanks

  2. Assuming they're a similar design to Desmoquattro tensioners? They are just bearings, widely available from any bearing supplier for around a fiver each and easy enough to change.

As you say you can get a kit with belts, bearings and even the locking nuts.

Try; http://www.exactuk.com/about-exactfit-cam-belts/ he's a member on here and will give a a discount (I think) to forum subscriber/members.

  4. If you can remove the bearings without causing damage to the idler pulley.
The new bearings should be fitted as follows.
clean all surfaces thoroughly and dry off, put the bearings in the deep freeze for a couple of hours.
Heat the bearings in the oven to 100c no hotter or you may damage the seals.
Before assemble apply a light film of oil in the idler, the bearing should slide in.
If not press in with a vice, press or a stud washers and nuts.
Under no circumstances use a hammer, this could cause brinelling (impact damage) of the track which will lead to premature failure.
If the inner track is tight on the spindle heat assembly to 100c, this should help the bearing slide over, again use a film of oil to assist assembly.
Last piece of advice, don’t use cheap bearings, SKF or FAG are best.
