748 Belts....

  1. This is probably an old subject to most of you on here, i'm a new member,
But, does anyone else fit gates car cambelts, 5192xs, ?

  3. Not worth the risk. For a few quid, it could cost you your motor. Use Ducati or Exactfit

  4. I was just about to ask the same thing, as I'm just about to do my belts and read in 2 different places that they are the same part.

Practical Sportsbikes did an article in July 2014 on changing Ducati belts, where they said the following, and I quote

"The British Firm who manufacture genuine Ducati belts sell the exact same specification belt as a Renault Clio part" (Gates 5192XS).

And I also came across this article

Ducati 916 belt change time again Gates 5192xs Renault clio 1.2 | ducati916bp

I have had similar experiences before. Like when I changed the needle valve assemblies in my GT250 X7. £92 for the pair from Suzuki, £48 for the exact same genuine parts from Allens Performance, just missing the Suzuki part number stickers on the bags !.

I don't have any experience of Ducati belts, so be interested to hear the opinion of those with experience ?.

    Cheers

  5. They are not the same..... Dimensions/teeth may be the same, but construction and tooth profile differ. Gates manufacture the belts for Ducati under a licence agreement I believe. The range of belts has been slimmed down now and all belts are "Gen 3" now. There's some useful info here Cam Belt info- Ducati Up North
I'm biased and would only use Ducati OEM. Exactfit are the only other viable option IMO. There's been so much about this on the 'net over the years, it's all very cloudy now. You pays ya money and all that........

  7. ExactFit Belts from California Cycleworks are 7 years+ established in the US with no reported issues and some Main Dealers in the US using them (but their laws are different for OEM use by Main Dealers than in the EU so it won't happen here of course).
Be careful you are not buying old stock if sticking with OEM, there are a lot about on Ebay, even from some Main Dealers.
I am the UK distributor for California Cycleworks and know our belts are strictly stock rotated as I do it myself. Like Nelly I can of course be said to be biased but thank him for his unbiased words.

We have a Forum discount too for 'Forum Subscribers' :)

  8. All interesting stuff, I guess people will always have different opinions/experiences.

Also found an old forum post of a member that has done 46,000+ miles changing his belts every 2 yrs no matter what mileage and has used all different types from genuine to the Gates Clio variety and never had any issues with any type. I guess like has been said, you pays ya £££......

I think that was you Mr. R ?. You must've been typing your reply at the exact same time as me ?. lol

  9. The thing that annoys me most, is the unnecessary markup on things by dealers on things like these belts. If you can buy virtually the same belts from the same company that makes the belts for Ducati for £30-£35 for the pair, why do Ducati need to charge so much ?.

If the belts were £60-£70 from Ducati then it would be a no-brainer for the peace of mind, but for 2/3 times the price of alternatives ?........ absolutely not.

My local Ducati dealer is quoting £110 now for a pair of genuine "Gates" belts :mask: and they're going up AGAIN in January apparently .

Well guess what Mr Ducati, I'll be buying mine from elsewhere, either ExactFit (£67.15 to forum subscribers I believe ?) or maybe even the Gates Clio versions. Changed every 2 years, there's no way either type of belt is going to fail.

  10. For many years people asked why the 4v belts were so expensive when compared to the 2v belts? (that in reality are just a slightly shorter version) - They used to be double the price at around £80 and £40 IIRC.

Ducati's answer was to increase the price of the 2v belts to around that of the 4v and then (presumably to keep some distinction?) increase the price of the 4v by a lesser amount.

IIRC the last ones I bought were around £110 for the 4v and £80 for the 2v. :(

Might give these exactfits a look, next time...

  13. Ducati belts for my 999 were rather more than that, when i was looking the Spring before last. I think they were something like £140.00 including Fuji nuts.
I went with ExactFit as I don't mind paying for quality but hate being fleeced. Rumour has it that the huge price rises have a lot to do with the takeover by VW/Audi.

  14. would it be right to say that the belts for a 748/916/996 will not fit a 998s? had a quick look on the dayco part finder and they list a 996R as a different part to the 748/916/996 one. would the 996R fit the 998s?

  15. Yep. They are a different belt altogether.

  16. I've used dayco belts for many years, Gates for the last 3 years. No problems whatsoever. Infact last month i replaced the Gates for a new set, £23 for a pair.
