There's a couple of muzak threads on the go so here's another, what gigs have blown you away? A couple that've made me tingle are Arthur Browns Kingdom Come in early/mid 70's, The band were painted gold, a silk screen infront of the stage that caught the light show giving a 3D effect with all kinds of props wandering on stage, a ship and traffic lightman are 2 I can remember. Guitars, theramin and strobes, all very trippy. In the 90's I saw POP Will Eat Itself at Brixton Academy, Cure for Sanity era, didn't know much about them at the time, they hit the spot with their energy and psycedelic punk rock hip hop(their desc iption). Saw them every chance I got after that.
Foo Fighters at Milton Keynes bowl last year, simply awesome. Always wanted to see Peter Gabriel in concert, dvds I have seen look brilliant.
incredible - had a similar effect on me as it was such a small initimate atmosphere. I can add that there was a large syringe with 'a human' in it and this was start of my fascination with drum machines - it was a Bentley and Arthur had it sat on a pedestal about microphone height and would rock it from left to right quite violently so it threw in a random 'off beat' which helped. Another group at about the same time was Ange from France - eerie and hypnotic, even tracked down an album in Oxford street. Something i will always regret is not going to the UFO club when it was in Tottenham Court Road particularly when Arthur or Floyd were there. Would like to hear if anyone on here did?
Seeing queensryche playing op mindcrime all the way through during the empire tour in the early 90's. Strange cause it was in the edinburger playhouse, and i couldnt stand the place cause its all seating. Getting on stage with ozzy during the no more tears time was pretty close too
Cant believe Im saying this but went to see Duran Duran in the 90's and I have to say they were fantastic. They did a version of grand master flash white lines which was great. Also saw a group in the late 80's called Grand Slam and if you know your onions you will know who played in that group. Met them all after the gig and had pint ;-) Took the ball and chain to see Robbie Williams and can only report it was utter shit!!!!!!
best concert ive been to was the pogues in the 80s , was awesome, unfortunately the old southampton gaumont was wreaked that night and they stopped concerts from then on, great shame, kev
As I said the best gigs Ive been to (and I've literally been to hundreds) have been the Blockheads. However the most memorable one was when I was about 16 and I went to see Hawkwind. The dancer, Stacia, took her bra off and threw it into the crowd and I caught it Wonder what happened to that bra.
Todd Rundgren Tour, 2010, London, the first time that A Wizard A True Star had ever been performed in its entirety in the UK. Magical and overwhelming.
I saw Peter Gabriel around '79-'80, absolutely shite IMO. As for best; seen many great bands over the years but my all-time favourite would have to be Led Zeppelin in 1980...
I thought it was Arthur trapped in it. Gong were support that night. Good Times.
I think you are right! - saw Gong with Steve Hillage a few times, very under rated - Todd Rundgren at 'The Venue' at Victoria (one of first 'Branson' dabbles with music halls) - Peter Gabriel so many times have forgotten - I thought he was great, particularly early 'Solsbury Hill' era.
The Christians at some small venue on the Quayside in Newcastle about 15 years ago. Just the right combination of music/venue/people/Newcastle Brown Ale/recreational narcotics. A fantastic evening. And Jools Holland with his brother Chris, Gilson, Swifty and Flanagan at a small blues club in Harrogate about 20 years ago. Excellent stuff.
Best gig ever for me was The Average White Band in Aberdeen in 1979? Absolutely fantastic playing and singing from a band who were right at the peak of their game at that time. A totally diffenent sort of gig was the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra playing Britten's War Requiem at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh in 2004. Unbelievably emotional concert which left me almost numb at the end. Unforgettable experience!
