What do you guys prefer as trackday tyres if you are riding to the track and don't have a van with paddock stands and warmers? I have a 1098S that sees some back roads, but I mostly use it for the occasional trackday 5-6 times a year. I can sacrifice the wet weather performance and durability of a sports touring tyre, but I don't want to go too extreme and risk cold tears on a road legal race tyre like a Dunlop GP Racer D212. I am currently running Diablo Rosso III, that is quite alright in the intermediate group, but I feel like I'm reaching the limit of the tyre especially on warm days. There isn't a lot of feedback and they are getting a bit slippery after a few fast laps. I guess Supercorsa SP's are a popular choice?
The new Diablo seems to get good reviews, more modern design than a supercorsa but only marginally more sport focussed. Will probably bridge the gap between what u are running and a race tyre well. Tbh supercorsa SP would probably also be a good option
Supercorsa SP is a fantastic tyre. Only downside is that it goes from ‘Ive got one more left in this rear’ to ‘crap, where did that cord come from’ in no time. Not bad longevity for the type of tyre it is, just difficult to gauge how much rubber left due to lack of tread.
I have mates who race on Dunlop qualifier tyres, no warmers allowed, and they are knee down first turn of the race after one warm up lap. Wear well too. But the best will be road version of the race rubber, eg SP corsa as fitted to panigale etc
There was a bloke on a gixer thou at Cartagena the other week running the Metzeler M7RR. Tyres were in great shape after 3 days but not sure what pace the guy was running.
+1 for the M7RR, quick to warm up and I find the profile gives plenty of feel in the lean which is smooth and progressive rather than tippy like the Dunlop. The Metzeler Racetec Interact used to be the control tyre for the 1000cc British Superstock so I use the newer Racetec RR on my 1098R for track and although road legal, I wouldn’t use it if wet. Andy
Same boat last week. Run standard Super corsa on my 1299 and just make sure I do 2 warm up laps. Easier said than done when your getting blitzed by the tyre warmer brigade. I know I will go down that route but still ride to the trackdays at the moment.
Another vote for the Supercorsa SP for performance but also the Metzeller M7RR which isn’t quite as grippy but it stays consistent and lasts for ages whereas the Supercorsa goes downhill pretty quickly. I raced on the M7RR in really dodgy conditions at Snetterton earlier in the year and it was faultless and hardly looks touched whereas a Pirelli would need replacing.
Another vote for M7RR. My bike is for both road and track days and having been a lifelong fan of Pirelli I am more than converted to the RR's. I've done about 5 track days on my current set but they look like they would do about the same again. But then I am only medium pace inters and obviously only 95bhp with a 748 - not exactly punishing. Did you see the lap that Rutter did on cold, road pressure RR's on a GSXR1000 - http://www.cambriantyres.co.uk/video-rutter-stock-gsx-r1000r-tt-lap/ I can't now ever say that the tyres held me back
I'm getting pretty tempted by the Metzlers. I'll probably pick up the M7RR's or the sportier Racetec RR K3's, which still seem to be alright for the commute to the track. If the Rosso Corsa 3's won't completely melt on the next track day, I might try selling them. Sides are nicely roughed up, but basically untouched in the center. Plenty of touring miles left in those babies.
