1260 Bike Electrically Dead

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Bumpkin, Nov 29, 2022.

  1. Need to move my bike that's been parked up in the garage for the last couple of months, albeit on a Optimate Solar Charger, and now won't show a glimmer of life on the dash. Steering is locked so moving it is going to be nigh on impossible.

Battery has 12.8v showing across the terminals. Have checked fuses. Hopefully not mice chewed wiring :(

12.8v isn't great. Now looking for mains charger... Wandering around swearing to myself...

  2. Crap, Charlie! Hope it turns out to be simple and cheap to fix.

  3. Remove battery and reinstall, mechanical equivalent of ctrl alt del

  4. May also be worth checking the battery in the key fob. Sometimes if even slightly low on charge/current retained in the battery, the bike won't recognise the fob and won't 'light-up'.....
Good luck with sorting: you can do it! o_O

  5. Assume you’ve tried the manual override? At least may rule out fob battery

  6. ^^^^ I concur.
Try using your PIN code or the red key.

  7. I had several occasions with same symptom but could be anytime anywhere, it was key fob related.

  8. Change the fob battery for a new Energiser unit. They are better than the other makes. I even carry a spare under my seat just in case of problems.

  9. If you have nothing at all on the dash and there is power in the battery check the main crimp onto the battery terminal. Mine failed on my 1200 enduro. There are two cables which feed the main fuse blocks and they had separated from the crimp. It should be a 5 minute fix and relatively straight forward if it is.

  10. Thanks all. I found my Optimate (one of three I have kicking around, side from the solar one) battery removed and put on charge. Didn't take long and not improved by much, 12.8 to 13.3v.

However, in the mean time, having removed the old battery I tried hooking up the LiPo I removed from my MV (doesn't fit the space but didn't care at this point) and the dash immediately showed some signs of life; lights across the top flashed and screen went on but black.... tried at this stage holding the key to the transponder symbol moulded into the right fairing in-fill panel. Dash then lit up fully and steering lock disengaged. Moved key away and after a few seconds it flashed up a 'key not present' message.

Swapped fob battery for a fresh (was still sealed in it's packet) and in date Duracell 3032. This didn't seem to work. Have removed and reseated this battery and will check tomorrow as I ran out of time and didn't have any free today. Have found a well in-date, sealed in pack Energiser in a drawer and will try that as HootOwl suggested.

So, hopefully it's now sorted. Will report back once I've had the chance to try again.

  11. My issue seemed to be the key fob battery had a tiny bit of movement available, a bit of folded paper to secure it did the trick.

  12. Tried the bike this morning and all seems good. So, it appears that it was the fob battery all along.

Thanks for all the suggestions, will try to engage my brain next time around.

  13. I am glad you are sorted. You are not the first to encounter issues with the fob mate. It's quite common.

Duracells don't seem to cut the mustard, even tho the voltage can look right. That's why I always use and suggest switching to Energisers. They take no space up, so stick one under the seat too. Even if you don't need it, you might just dig someone else out of the mire ;)

  14. Snap! Went to start mine today to take it to the dealers for a fuel sender replacement and the battery was flat even though it's been on a Ducati battery tender. Plugged in an older Optimate and it seems to have taken a change so I'll see how it is on Monday.

(PS Changed the key battery as well just in case)

  15. Don't beat yourself up dude. I once went round in circles with the same issue. Turns out I couldn't see the little piece of clear film on one side of the new battery.

  16. Have you got a Specs-Savers anywhere near you then.......;)

  17. Yup. Im a regular. When I do the valves I look like Stephen fletcher off of Repair shop, 2 pairs stacked on the forehead.
