1198 Bike With Potentially Dubious History

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by John W, Jul 30, 2024.

  1. I don't know if any of the rest of you saw the post on fb in Ducati Owners Club UK.
A guy had bought a while back what was supposedly an 1198S (from the panels).
Turns out it is regd as an 1198, but has 848 engine, rear end, etc.

He has got his money back from the dealer but I have posted to ask him to swing by and share the reg / vin, because I for one expect this will get sold again at some point, and needs recording somewhere.

  3. I know I should be surprised but given the tales on here, especially one particular 1198, I’m more disappointed. Please tell me it wasn’t from an authorised dealer. Andy

  4. What a shit show! They should be getting time for that. There are tell tale visible signs that it’s not an 1198.
Take the small rear axle for example, any Ducati enthusiast would have clocked that straight away.

  5. Surprised also he didn’t notice the power difference…

  6. The guy was coming from another brand (trumpet I think), wasn't from a main dealer (so they probably got burned too if they simply traded it without doing any checks), and yes a bunch of people pointed out the various tell-tale signs it wasnt an S or even an 1198.
Hopefully the guy will come join / post, as he has returned it and bought a 959 panigale.

Regarding power, he had hardly ridden it.

  7. Wet clutch..?
People can be such losers for doing things like that.

  8. I saw that on ebay last year, I emailed the guy (company) who had it, but they assured me it was an 1198, I told them it clearly isn't so they ignored me.

  10. Got to say the swingarm is 1198 or 848 evo, and the hub etc is 848 evo. My guess is a smashed up 848 evo got made new with a 1198 frame, although tbh I wouldn’t have gone anywhere near it just from the look

  12. And it had a £1000 less miles on it a year later…. Hmm

  13. DVLAs system not sophisticated enough to pick that up?

  14. Bought by and sold by someone who has never been near a Ducati of that age then

  15. Seems you can’t trust even dealers. Superbike Factory were selling a “749R” which patently wasn’t (e.g. brakes, swingarm) yet declined to alter their advert even when I pointed out the discrepancies.

  16. The 14 day thing works well for the purchaser - I used it once to return a Volvo (OK, I know!). The car was collected next day, money refunded in full soon after. I don’t think the dealer was very happy, but ’tis the law.
