Bird strike?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by redsail, Jul 19, 2013.

  1. Funny, I was wondering how many have hit a bird while riding because I've been buzzed by them quite a few times as I'm whizzing past country hedgrows. Then today I got clobbered by one! Hit just above my visor, a glancing blow I expect but it was still a hell of a wallop. Didn't stop but I doubt the bird was very well afterwards.

Anyone been hit one more spectacularly? Just wondering how dangerous a direct strike would be at decent B road speeds?

  2. I remember a guy on ducatisti who hit a pheasant. The screen took the brunt and bounced it over his head! Saw the bike at the ducati TD at silverstone that year and it was a mess.

  3. I thought this was about women taking the day off work as it is too hot !

  4. Got hit by a bat in the Mendips

  6. I thought it was a thread about Chris Brown........

  7. Is that a euphemism for something

  8. Heh. Chris Brown.

I followed a mate who struck a white pigeon at speed on his Fireblade. I went through a cloud of feathers that was like the most blinding snowstorm I've ever experienced. It was mad.

Myself, I have managed to work out how fast I have to be going in order to go safely past a wandering pheasant before it has a chance get in my way and kamikaze me. Very good to know

  9. Me too. I had my visor open and it hit me right in the face! Flappy leathery thing...wierd!

  10. I hit a sparrow while doing about 60mph. It hit just above my visor and you wouldn't believe how hard it felt, like sobody throwing a brick at my head. Luckily I was travelling in a straight line and took a few seconds to regroup.

  11. the mendips you say? ooh painful!

  12. pigeon at about ?00 on the A30, ducked quick as I saw out of the corner of my eye, hit me on the knuckle , ouch!

  13. The bird I hit was small but it was like someone throwing a sock full of sodden sand at my head at full pelt. Ouch!

  14. I had a sparrow hit me in the chest

  16. I also had a stick insect in France , stayed behind the monster fairing for about 100 miles lol

  17. I've hit a pig whilst riding in India and kicked several wild dogs whilst being attacked by them. Run over several snakes as well.

  18. An indeterminate bird in the shoulder - surprisingly painful.

More worrying was cresting a rise in Glen Coe (somewhat "on it") and seeing a red deer grazing at the road side. Now that wouldn't have been fun. A deer almost zoomed into my car 2 days ago near home, but saw me at the last moment and reared up as it changed its mind. It wasn't even dark (or dusk). You have to be a bit circumspect going through the forests around here. They can pop out at any moment. This one just appeared at speed from a field of maize or something.

  19. a guy i work with hit a seagul on his Bandit 1200, took him clean off the back of the bike. somehow he managed to get away with very little injuries and miraculously the bike kept going in a straight line, through a gap in the hedge and came to a stop in a ploughed field with barely a scratch on it!

  20. must have been carrying a coconut :upyeah:
