Hello guys I have seen this written somewhere but when I did the search I couldn't find the reason. My break fluid went black today and was wondering why and what's the fix. My bike is still under warranty. Cheers
Contamination from the seal and heat. Flush the system through with fresh fluid and bleed it. No sweat.
Hi, I had the same thing, replaced under warranty, but can't help thinking I am just waiting for it to happen again! Had numerous bikes never had this before?
My brake fluid rather black as well at 7k, booked in for service in 2 weeks time. Will they change under warranty?
Just had major service done with belts, clutch, coolant, and fluid change, cost approaching £860 300miles ago. Went out on her yesterday and noticed that the clutch fluid had turned black. 300miles!!
Stop panicking everyone. It is contamination from the seals, but it's nothing to worry about. For some reason Aprilias suffer worse from this, with the fluid going black almost immediately. Just stick to the service schedule and it'll be fine.
Yup, was the same on my Tuono. The colour is not an indication of its serviceable life on these bikes. A dealer really progressed a warranty claim as a result of this ? Was one of the first things my dealer said when I picked the bike up. [pointing at the fluid reservoirs] "it wont stay like that for long" My 2013 manual calls for a change every three years. That said , I change it annually as its something I have always done on all my bikes and its a simple 15 minute job.
I bought a tin of black brake fluid, the seller told me it was a special carbon fibre brake fluid, that was designed for my ducati. Have I been done?
Thanks guys, so I shouldn't worry? If the fault is known then why don't they change there seals? I'd rather a nice gold oil than black. My other resivours are going the same way.
All it is is some kind of chemical reaction that discolours the fluid. Maybe if you left the same fluid in for years it may have a detrimental effect, but if the fluid's changed in accordance with the schedule it'll be fine. I'd rather sleep with Kelly Brook, but you don't always get what you want...
Mine used to go, most noticeably on the clutch, but when I started maintaining it myself I switched to Shell Advance brake fluid and it's never happened since. Weird, but it may not be just the seals, but a combination of fluid and seals.
So are the seals deteriorating into the fluid? or is it from the brake pipe? either way if it's turning the fluid black something must be dissolving in it.
It's just a very mild chemical reaction, nothing to worry about. Sure, if you didn't change the fluid for ten years I'm sure the seals would fail, but if you've got even a tiny amount of common sense it'll never come to that.
It's good we pay such a high price for this peace of mind, knowing everything is going to work as it should and things will stay the right colour for a long period of time, not just two months. Lol how do ducati do it?
