Got the first ride of the year on the Streetfighter this Sunday. Switched on and found the dash was blank. The warning lights across the top are all working fine, the immobiliser light flashes and the screen backlight is on but the LCD display is blank. I've checked the dash fuse, looked for loose connectors and disconnected and reconnected the battery in the hope that might boot something into life but no joy. It was working fine the last time I put the key in. It hasn't been damaged or taken a knock, there's no moisture visible and no smearing or discolouration of the screen. It must be a power supply issue. If the LCD was breaking down I'd expect some of it to be displayed but its completely blank. Baffled. Anyone got any ideas?
I'm new to ducati so take this with a pinch of salt. Could you not unplug the display and with the ignition on put a lamp tester on the pins on the plug. If it glows then you have power.
I'm wary of just unplugging things when they're live. I don't want to pop something with a surge. I find it odd that I've got the screen back light but not the display. I'd have though both would share the same connector. There's quite a lot of wiring in the headlight pod as well. It isn't immediately obvious what feeds what. Chris, the headlight is working. High and low beam. Does that affect the diagnosis? Should I Still check the relay? If so which one is it? Excuse my ignorance but Ducati owner's manuals aren't much help.
You don't need to unplug anything other than the display plug. Find out on a diagram what is earth, and what is live feed on the plug. With a 12v lamp tester or a simple circuit with a bulb at on end, it won't blow anything. (only the bulb on the tester if it did). Only real way to test you have power to the display.
Going to try Scorpio Electronics. They say they can repair/rebuild/recalibrate almost any digital dash from component parts way cheaper than a new one and with a guarantee. A new Ducati dash for the SF is £600.. Just got to establish first that the dash has actually failed and its not a supply issue. Looking for a legible wiring diagram first so I can see what I've got to test. There's an awful lot of wires in there so I need a diagram to identify the power supply for the display.
Go to the ducati service site and download service manual. It's at the back of the book. Service and maintenance motorcycle | Ducati Looks like (I'm on my phone so hard to judge) pin 23 is live and the last pin is earth. Earth not a problem really as you can earth the test lamp on chassis. Once you found pin turn ignition on (don't start) then test the pin. If it glows then you have power and unit at fault.if no power then trace wiring back
Cheers for the link Bruders. I've got the diagram in the book but its completely illegible. You can at least zoom in with the online version. I'm still not clear what needs testing but its pretty academic anyway. I rang Scorpio Electronics. He's got a 1098 SB dash in at the moment with exactly the same problem and it is the dash that's failed, not the power supply. The problem is these cannot be rebuilt because he can't get the parts. All he can do is recalibrate a S/H one to transfer your bikes details or transfer your existing mileage to a new one. Haven't found a S/H one. New ones are £600 and a dealer told me, its not being made any more. They still have some old stock but when they're, they're gone. Looking on the internet it seems this is a common problem so presumably a new unit will probably fail in 15,000 miles as well. I've e-mailed Ducati-UK for clarification. Maybe - just maybe - there was a faulty batch which only affected a particular production run of bikes. Otherwise, unless I can find someone who can rebuild the existing dash or supply a reliable aftermarket replacement, it looks like this bike has built in obsolescence which cannot be overcome.
Keep us updated. Sounds like a right pain. Any used units on eBay? Could a newer unit from ducati not be used (with small loom changes) worse case
Will do. Nothing on ebay. There is a complete cockpit set from a SB on ebay (dash, keys, controls, wiring the lot) but its the same price as a new dash form Ducati. Scorpio say the early SB units are different to the later ones. They have different functions which can't be adapted so aren't interchangeable. It needs someone to work out precisely which functions are controlled by the dash and which by the ECU. But then the loom is designed to serve these functions as things are so changing or adapting the dash could become extremely difficult and fraught with possible undesirable consequences. I hope Ducati UK will get back to me today.
The dash units are still available. I've got a customer with a similar problem. Haven't had the bike in the workshop yet to have a look though. I've uploaded the pdf of the wiring diagram. The key is in your manual
Cheers Nelly. I've got the diagram from Bruders upload but I still don't know what I've got to test. I'm no auto electrician I'm afraid. I contacted Ducati and they are prepared to consider a goodwill request through the dealer I bought the bike from with the possibility of a free or heavily discounted replacement. If go for this and see what if anything Ducati are prepared to do to help given the circumstances, I've got to get the bike 50 miles to Bristol so that Riders can confirm the fault. (Ducati won't accept a diagnosis that I've done myself). That's £100 (£93 per hour workshop charge...) for the diagnosis plus getting the bike there - I don't want to ride it there with no speedo, no rev counter and no temp gauge. Then the worst case is that Ducati won't offer a free dash which means I'll have to pay the full cost of £600 for a new unit plus fitting (£200) because they tell me they need to format the new dash on a Ducati computer to make it work properly. So potentially the total cost going through Ducati could be £900. £300 if Ducati give a me new dash for free (unlikely on a 5 year old bike) or £600 if they let me have one at a 50% discount (possible but still a long shot). Or I could look for a S/H one. But how much will that cost, will it be any good and compatible with the systems on my bike (Scorpio electronics tell me early 1098 SB one aren't) and then I've got to get it recalibrated by Scorpio or someone similar - £75 plus postage so best part of £100. And then I've got to be sure its going to function properly with all the other systems and won't cause other problems. Don't know what to do really. I guess I'll have to swallow the £100 and let Riders do the diagnosis in the first instance and see what Ducati say then go from there. There's a lot to be said for kickstarts, magnetos and Smiths clocks...
Hi Gimlet, did you have any more resolving this?, was there a reasonable explanation? I find myself in the same scenario, bikes been tucked away, started fine, dash lights work but the LCD is extremely faint, it was all fine when I put it away. My garage is never damp and there's no sign of moisture, unsure what my next step is, appreciate any help
did you guys ever figured it out i have a HM1100s 2008 with similar issues, dash is blank, all other electricals work, bike doesn't start remove and replug the starter relay harness and it starts working again, till the next power off.
