Is the process for bleeding the break system with ABS the same as a non ABS bike? Front lever feels a little soft on the first squeeze? Advice needed!!
Maybe everybody's busy. In answer to your question, yes it's the same. In theory you should cycle the ABS unit to get fluid through it but without specialised equipment that's not possible. Normal bleeding will work fine except in the unlikely even that there is air inside the ABS unit. After bleeding you could go out and pull a few stoppies to get the ABS going, then try bleeding it again but that's not likely to be necessary.
If you search this forum there were a number of posts regarding just this subject. Someone changed the banjo fittings on the ABS unit for bleed nipple fixings. At least two people followed suit and found the modification of benefit, As Derek said, bleeding is the same process for ABS and non ABS but you need to activate the ABS unit to complete the process. Searched this and other forums, didn't have the answer I needed. Just want to bleed breaks first before going down the route of banjo bolts etc.
You should find that there are advocates of pushing fluid from the master cylinder, pushing from the caliper back to the master cylinder and sucking fluid out of the bleed nipple. My preference is to empty the master cylinder reservoir, take the flexible hose off the reservoir and then using a 150mm syringe dody filled with fluid inject it first to the master cylinder bleed nipple and then the caliper bleed nipple. When I am happy that there air no bubbles I carefully separate the syringe from the flexible pipe making sure its full, reattach it to the reservoir, fill the resrvoir with new fluifd and then squeeze the flexible pipe to remove the air bubble. I have a cloth on hand for spills and the process is reatively easy and quick. Andy
