Brake And Rear Indicators Flashing, Jerky Throttle Etc

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Horico, Apr 8, 2016.

  1. Went to the bike today (1199s) and on turning the key the rear brake lights started flashing in time with both rear indicators. No errors on The dash or anything. The bike started fine as usual but the flashing continued.

Turned it off, got angry and phoned the selling dealer as it's still under 3 month warranty. Trouble is they're 90 miles away and I need to get it to them at my cost to diagnose. Later, once calmer, I stuck my lid on and went down the road close to me. On anything more than a tickle of throttle, the power disappeared and the amber light in the centre of the shift lights came on. The speed then read 0 on the dash before going back to showing actual speed.

Clearly it's electrical, the last time I was out the rain was biblical. My first thoughts are 'really?' But that won't help. I called my local dealer before the ride and they suggested it might be a corroded connector on the ecu. I didn't know about the issues found on the ride at the time.

Are there any things I can check myself or has anyone experienced similar? Is there any way to read the codes without plugging in etc? Off to ring my breakdown people to see if they'll take it back to the dealer if it has to go back!

    Cheers

    Matt

  2. Don't be tempted to have a go, let the dealer sort it out as it is under warranty. There will be a procedure in the owner's manual to access the fault codes.

  3. It's at the dealer now. Unfortunately when it was taken there by the AA, the driver dropped it getting it off the truck. It was thought it was only clutch lever and bar end that got a slight nick but the garage confirmed yesterday the steering pins(?) have been broken and they're part of the bottom yoke so all needs replacing. That pissed me off as that will need doing (and paying for by the AA) before I can get it back.

The dealer plugged it in but it wouldn't talk to the diagnostic machine. Next update is that the battery is flat, just like happened to me. The battery is only a week old as I only just replaced it - the problem must have killed the original too.

I think I'm going to have to drive the 90 miles to the dealer to give it the once over to make sure there's no more damage before sending the quote to the AA.

I would have liked to have had it today to go see skakey Byrne at onyerbike but hey ho. It would have only rained and broken down again!

  4. Probably be the white connector block at the rear of the tank-goes to rear lights and as the diagnostics won't read the connector for that is on that plug as well- they go green when they get wet and its CAN line wiring fairly common

  5. Yeah, I've read a few things about it and sent the dealer an email with three separate threads detailing the error. I know it will be fixed, I'd just like to know if I can do anything to future proof it other than rely on a bit of grease etc.

I'm toying with the idea of going to Assen for BSB's and don't want to worry about reliability.

  6. That's really shit luck mate.

  7. Get yourself a tin of ACF-50

  8. Fortunately I've got a big bottle of the stuff. It was on my to do list after the clean, before it went wappy.

  9. So, went to see the stricken patient today to inspect the damage and have a chat with the service guys. Before I arrived, I was aware of the clutch lever and bar end being scuffed, as well as the steering pins being sheared off.

I got there today and was shown that the gear lever was bent which in turn has impacted the lower fairing. There's a small crack in the left middle fairing and a scuff on the left mirror plastic.

So far, the parts bill comes in at £1450. Labour will likely take that to the £2k mark. Silly AA man!

It's going on the lift tomorrow for a final check before the quote is sent off to the AA.
