I've just looked at a picture of my 1st 916, the discs do look to be floaters. Why do you need to know? View attachment 17861 View attachment 17862
Those are the same as mine. Gues they are semi floaters by lack of rattle/movement? I'm considering an upgrade and pondering the options, it's a bit complicated as I'm running 848 forks/calipers with spacers under the 748 discs. I could use 848 discs, but would need to change the front wheel...On and on it goes...
There are a few different centres, as Steve says, which are all "semi" floating but have different weights. The first is the "pepperpot" as shown above. These are the oldest and heaviest design. Then you have the "straight" spoke design. These are lighter than the pepperpots. I believe these are still steel centres. They are the most common model and replaced the pepperpot design around 2000. The latest and lightest are the "snowflake" centres, which look like this. These were mainly used on later "S" and "R" model bikes. I believe the centres are alloy which makes them very light. You can also get the fully floating cast iron disks which were fitted to early trick models like the SP/SPS bikes: For all of the semi-floating models you can replace the rivets to make them fully floating, but to be honest I doubt you'd notice the difference!!
antonye's top photo shows discs which fit my SS but could have come from an ST2 (or ST3)............they are significantly lighter than the OEM SS discs which look like those on the yellow 916 above...........however they are semi floating (or in other words they don't float, just rattle a little bit) but are steel rotors. 998's used the snowflake design even on the base models and they are alloy. The ones above are sometimes described as a keyhole design, they were fitted to 996's. The snowflake has straighter spokes
Hi Nelson, I had a similar problem as had a 999 wheel to go on my 996 SPS. Of course the offset of all the disc's that fit this wheel won't work for this set up. I had to get custom made disc's. As I race I went for full floating, I got them from ISR Brakes and am very happy with the service from Acke. They look the part as well.
So you need a 6 hole disc with the same offset as the 5 hole 848........that is the same diameter 330 or 320 with the same centre size.....i am thinking it would be cheaper and more available to get the later 5 hole wheel and source discs for that...or speak to mode performance with the numbers and see if anything else is that combination R1 blade GSXR who knows,......
Ah yes, I remember now! If you want to stick with your 916 (6-hole) front wheel you have 2 options: 1. go with 748R/996R disks which have 10mm offset rather than the standard 5mm 2. fit a 5mm spacer behind a standard disk I was lucky enough to find a pair of really good 748R disks and so I've fitted those. If you want spacers, these will do the trick: Brembo-type 6 bolt 5mm disc spacer Yamaha Ducati Aprilia Bimota Benelli Laverda | eBay
Ah yes, forgot about those! I think those triangle design ones were fitted to some 996 and certainly the 998 base models. No idea if they're lighter than the snowflake ones or not - maybe just a different design!
Correcto...!!! 749/999/848 blah blah wheel and matching discs, or my wheel with 15mm offset discs (££££) or 10mm offset with 5mm spacerizer.
ah, healthy diet..... heres an exert from mode performance brembo pages they list the sizes etc you could compare to http://www.modeperformance.co.uk/media/CATALOGUE_PDF/modeperformance_product_catmoto_2012.pdf
wouldnt that be something, an appearance on Mastermind.... "your name..... specialist subject - Ducati front brake discs, 748/916/996/0998 , full and semi floating between 1997-2006." pick the bones out of that question master, test me for two minutes..... go one, someone have a go and register!!!! there is some depth of knowledge on this site/with some people..... nice one
Ok brake disc masterminds.... Did all the 748R models have the 15mm off-set whether showa or ohlin forks? I'm looking at a set that the seller says are from a 748R but is a bit unsure how to measure/check the off-set. They look like these.... Which look the same as the ones fitted to my old MY2000 748R.
They are Keyhole discs and I have the same on my 996/748 and they only have the stock offset. So from the photo it would be hard to tell, the seller really needs to confirm the offset.
