Braking Markers

  1. @Fairy Cringe
I suffer from this, so you choose a braking marker on the inside of the corner? And the tipping in point on the inside?

  2. It varies. I tend to lock in a mark on the track or the beginning of a kerb. Both brake markers and tip in points… But that corner at Almeria zooms up so quickly I consciously don’t look ahead but slightly to the right for the apex. Just my way I guess. I’ve seen loads of lads sit it up there when they could have easily made it. The old target fixation thing- look at the gravel and that’s where you’re going…. Eeek…

  3. The ideal is choose a marker, outside of the corner really hit could equally be a line on the track or whatever works for you, and as you approach start looking towards the apex and use peripheral vision for when you reach the marker, then repeat as you head to apex with exit point.

    Super bikes school 101.

  4. It’s funny how the brain works, well mine anyway… for me it might be a tree on the horizon or a tyre wall coming into view that triggers my turn in or line change. Brake markers are generally beside the track…

  5. Tbh I have always struggled with brake markers. Turn in point, apex, exit easy peasy. But brake markers terrible at. Wasn’t a problem until I started riding bikes that needed heavy braking instead of those little Ducatis that really were down a gear and turn in, very little braking

  6. I usually wait till my arse starts puckering ,and then think I better start doing stuff

  7. I work back from the apex where I release the brake and get on the gas.
So this week at Andalucia end of the back straight is a nice hairpin from a 150+ straight. There's a 200m board and a marshal post on the left.
If you decide on a marker like those before a turn you will most likely end up releasing the brake before the apex, so popping the front up and de-stabilising at exactly the wrong moment.
I prefer to get that front end nailed as far into the turn as possible with the front tyre squashed, feel the rear hook up and pour on the gas asap.
The next left onto the final straight is faster, but very similar.

  8. On the old Snetterton circuit, Norwich straight, I used to hit my chosen marker board and then count 1 before piling them on.

  9. There is a tale about a Formula 1 driver in the 60s who used a lady with a parasol as a braker marker into a high speed corner.
Unfortunately she was slowly walking along the track in the direction of the corner and got there just in time to see an almighty crash.
Make sure your marker isn't going to wander off

  10. And don’t use the shadow of say, a Dunlop bridge… :scream:

  11. There was a programme a few years ago about F1 drivers and one of the exceptional things they possess is other-worldly peripheral vision. Schumacher did some tests and could read things from his side vision many couldn’t read looking straight at it…at 140mph plus.

Of you want to go fast, you have to improve and train this thing.
