Brand New Tyres On Track - How To Scrub In

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by Fastmonkey, Sep 22, 2014.

  1. Off to Almeria in 3 weeks and will have brand new Pirelli Supercorsa SP v2's on. I won't have a chance to take the bike out on the road so they will be squeaky shiny new.

So what is the correct procedure to scrub them in as I've never ridden on track with brand new tyres before.

I thought that if I baked them up in my warmers then that might get the release agents up to the top and then do a couple of laps steady on them. Come in have a look and then go out and get on it.

But I have no idea so would appreciate some pro advice ;-)

  2. Couple of steady laps should be okay I wouldve thought.

Edit: oops. Just noticed 'pro advice'.

  3. Yep its easier than on the road. I scrubbed in a new R10 rear on a trackday and it was to the edge after the first session :upyeah:. I had the same concerns as you but it really wasnt an issue.

Just treat it like warming up tyres (i.e. a couple of steady laps before you go banzai)

  4. You going over with Tracksense ?

  5. A friend of mine swears by giving new tyres a thorough wiping with acetone on a rag to short cut the process of scrubbing in. Not only does it remove all release agents, he says it makes the surface sticky, so no holding back from the off...

  6. Thanks for the tips everyone, seems like heat is the answer to getting them ready to use to their full potential so seems like having them in the warmers and a few careful laps increase the lean angle and off we go.

@Niven770 - No mate Focused Events. 3 weeks today and counting !

  7. Warmers, cane it. Simple.

  8. ^^^ lol ! I might take it a little easy to start with ! I've got 3 days ;-) And a new quick action throttle, cold brand new tyres reduced throttle travel sounds like a recipe for disaster !

  9. @Fastmonkey Cheers, I'm over with Tracksense on 8th. Enjoy. You are in for a treat if you haven't been before.

  10. Nice. I'm over there in November....... Still waiting for @bradders to 'pursuade' Mrs Bradders it's a good idea ;). The scrubbing in just gets rid of the release agent on the surface of the tyre so if they're warm it will get the pressures right and make the surface stickier but they will still have the release agent on there. Just steady away and you'll be fine...... Just like a normal tyre after a lap or 2.

    Enjoy

  11. Went back in May, I think my avatar is from there........... Be great to go again as I'm quicker, I know the track a little and my bike is better so can't wait.

  12. as bradders says warmers you will be good to go , you can scrub a track tyre in 2 corners , don't even worry 100 times easier than scrubbing road tyres in,

  13. Had a new set of Supercorsas popped on at Silverstone last visit. Pretty sure I went out on them cold, took a couple of steady laps to scrub in then went for it....took over 12 seconds off my best round there and couldn't stop with the knee down in that session (ok, so my best was a 2.58 before so not setting the world alight but I'd only ever lightly grazed a slider before :D ). Seems a few laps to get the heat in should be fine :upyeah:

    *Note: definatly not pro

  14. Yeah, I was booked on that too. I've had to cancel and instead I'll be grafting away in a rig/shipyard in South Korea. Great... But I'm booked for the gig back there in May... Woo hooo... Maybe see you there?

  15. @Mary Hinge, I was remembering you were going and was going to give you a shout, PITA that you cannot make it now :(. I'm probably going to do the Barcelona trip again at the beginning of next year however the dates are not yet confirmed so unlikely I'll make the Almeri one, however you never know :).

  16. The sp,s are a serious good tyre, have gone through a couple sets this year without any issues at all. Incredible grip..
    Few laps and pin it:)

  17. If ur using warmers Almeria's got long left+rights, so 1 lap and ur fine.
Enjoy, wish I was going !-(
