hi guys. just changing break fluids on my 996, using this: Castrol Motorcycle Brake Fluid 1 Litre - Demon Tweeks can i also replace clutch fluid with it?
Tried to find a spec on the Castrol web site as I doubt this product is for the high performance market despite the wording in the product description. DOT3 is an old spec and DOT4 is slowly being replaced by racing spec fluids as they filter into the main stream. Clutch and brake fluid are the same so no bother there but I would not expect this product to provide consistent performance if pushed like on a track day nor would I expect it to last the 2 years recommended between fluid changes. I am however curious why this fluid is not suitable for Harley Davidsons. Andy
They have used DOT 5 as standard since 1976 therefore it doesn't meet their recommendations. I agree the spec. is very low I would use something better and certainly not use it for the braking system as it may even boil if used on a track, Mine did that using DOT 4 and I had to upgrade the spec. and change the pads.
Yes I would say so, DOT 4 is good enough. It does depend on how you ride the bike. Is this actually the fluid that the link refers to as it says in the listing that the photo is for illustration purposes only.
If I had ABS then I'd run Dot 5.1. At the moment I run this in my 999 and 1198 ATE Super R Blue Dot 4 Brake Fluid - 1 Litre Free P&P too.
yeah, looks identical in real life. so just to confirm- it is ok for clutch as well, correct? to be honest, 996 is hardly used and i just wank over it. I've changed fluids in my R1 yesterday , got half a litre left so i thought i might as well change everything on 996 as well otherwise it will only go to waste
mate, not the way i do it. managed to waste half a litre yesterday ,fuck knows how… hope i have enough left for just one more! I've been told that you can't leave open brake fluid to sit on the shelve anyway,it will go off. so i though i might as well change the lot
It will work in your 996 clutch but is likely to turn black fairly quickly. I would like to make a suggestion however and that is buy a better spec next time and expect to pay anything up to £25 to £30 for a half litre. The Castrol would not be my first choice in either of your other bikes especially as an enthusiastic rider. Andy
thanks everyone. very useful. forums are amazing! i am going to ask another probably stupid sounding question for some on broken bolt removal, but better start another thread on it
if you are having bleeding problems use a one way valve like this one. I use one and It wastes very little fluid. You can also bleed from the bottom upwards using a decent syringe. SOLO BRAKE / CLUTCH BLEEDER AUTOMATIC BLEED PIPE / TUBE | eBay
