Hey all, been thinking about breakdown cover as when i took out my insurance cover recently the girl very helpfully/honestly told me that the breakdown cover they sell is not all that and i would be better of going else where! so where? had green flag some 4 years back and the one time i needed help 100 odd miles from home on a Saturday night, they took 4 hrs to turn up in a car tow truck, knew nothing about bikes and wanted to "tow" my bike 20 miles in the opposite direction from home to a garage that didnt open till monday! Some i have inquired about in the past wont help if less than 2 miles from home, charge per mile to get bike home if more than 10, will only take bike to a garage and not home bla bla bla... any advice?
I’ve been thinking of break down cover, was offered it for £39.99 breakdown and recovery from Hastings direct after renewing my insurance. This one has a clause saying you will be covered for up to two claims which arise from a common fault on the same vehicle and a maximum of five claims in total. Would be good to hear what others have for their money
I currently have insurance through Carole Nash so in theory that includes Europe wide breakdown cover, but I have heard it suggested that with an old bike a long way from home they could just write it off. In UK I have cover via a policy I've had for years with Aviva - it covers me and missus in/on any vehicle. MIght be worth asking them for a quote - last time I renewed I haggled a bit and got it way cheaper than AA etc. Aviva send the RAC if you have to call for help. The one time I used it on a bike it was a puncture and they did a temporary fix.
i have a multi bike policy with carol nash, i used there breakdown cover when my 996 rectifier went in september whilst at the ducati owners club rally in dorset, happened on the saturday rideout, chap who came out only did bikes, was there in an hour, turned up in a proper van with tail lift for bikes, all the straps etc, checked it, took me the 15 odd miles to the campsite which was in the opposite direction to get my tent & stuff , then took us back to cornwall, great service i recon , also have AA family policy which cover all cars & bikes, found them to be good, had a bad experiance with RAC , wouldnt use again
I was with Carole Nash when I had the SS Their breakdown cover was good I broke down due to alarm draining battery and it took a couple of hours to collect me. Bike was put on a proper bike lift and taken back to my house Read the small print and see what exactly it offers
Halifax that do a bank account that covers AA breakdown, mobile phone insurance, travel insurance, home heating, plumbing emergency cover, etc, for £10 per month if you pay in £750pm and have 2 DDs. I have not got round to looking at it properly but my mate swears by it. Never needed breakdown cover before owning a Jap IL4 but am getting cover in the spring now I have an Italian.
It's worth checking that those breakdown deals bundled with bank a/cs etc cover bikes. A while back I went to switch to a NatWest account which had AA breakdown cover, holiday insurance etc bundled with it - and therefore to cancel my [personal, i.e. cars and bikes etc] AA breakdown cover. But when I checked the small print it said it covered cars only and specifically exluded bikes.
Halifax does, I was reading the small print yesterday and my mate had the AA out to his Aprillia. It's also the driver, not the vehicle so you can call them if your riding your mates Duc and it breaks down.
Natwest is green flag, not AA, so its vehcile based. Halifax, lloyds, TSB, BoS all have AA and its personal based so any vehcile you are in, Barclays have RAC which is also personal None cover RTA as standard
I'm with Barclay's...got a premium account that gives us RAC cover on anything that were in...including the bikes.
