Just riding home on the commute, accelerate and bang, engine dies. Not a battery issue, all lights work, but when you press the starter it makes a whirring sound, not a clicking sound as in faulty starter. What am I looking at?
So you were on the move and accelerating when the engine died and just stopped pulling? Did it make a noise? Then on restarting the engine is whirring over as if no compression? Belt(s)
Like already said sounds like belts , cars do the same when they snap , just whizz over on the stater motor because it's clipped the valves so there's no compression resistance
Yes seen that a few times , the 2L hdi peugeots and citroens prone for that one , never took a cylinder head off one as yet , get away with broken rocker arms normally
Well update from the garage is knackered valves, I am going to get a large bill. The bike has had new belts at 17500, it's done 24500 now and was serviced 2 weeks ago, so I am surprised that it's let go in such a manor.
Now I'm only used to older Dukes so I'd say the belts were at their limit, and past safe if it'd been parked up over winters. I've had a belt snap on a desmoquatro and doing the work myself had me back on the road to the tune of £400. Feel your pain and hope you get back up and running soon.
To answer your questions guys, the bike is used every week day for a short commute 17 miles each way, the belts were less than a year old so not parked up for long periods, doesn't seem right to me for belts to go after 7000 miles
Try some decent belts this time But in all seriousness a snapped belt is rare - can you post pictures of the snap , have the teeth been ripped off as this points to other mechanical failure. Also the bearings can go too in time, I read somewhere there was a bad (or cheaper) batch of bearings used at a point in time. And of course an error when fitting, tightening the tensioner and setting correctly can be main issues of a so called belt failure.
It's in the shop so I haven't got pics yet. The mechanic is off today so I'll see what is what tomorrow.
