Whilst on holiday I managed to break the flip out key blade on the fob for my Multistrada Enduro. It snapped at the point where it enters the holder swivel. Ducati were unable to help with a replacement as the computer only shows the complete fob at £112, without cutting or reprogramming. I only needed the blade. Local, central belt of Scotland, locksmiths were unable to help so I turned to eBay. I found a company from Kent who advertised key cutting for various motorcycles which worked by sending them a picture of your key, I read the reviews and it seemed genuine so I pressed the buy it now, sent a picture and a confirmation email of my needs. About 30 minutes later I recieved a phone call from them. The eBay listing is for a normal key not a flip out blade, which I needed. However I was told if I send both parts of the broken blade he will hand make a blade to suit which may just need a small amount of final adjustment to fit the swivel on the fob. I also decided to continue with the purchase of a normal key, for the fuel cap and panniers. This was at lunchtime on Friday. Saturday afternoon and the key arrived and it works perfect. I've still to send off the broken parts and I'll update this with the result. Service like this I feel deserves recognition, especially when it cost me £9.98. The replacement blade for the fob arrived today. A quick file just to adjust the fit for the flip out holder and its job done. Very happy with the service and finished article.
I had a normal key made up which I hang round my neck on a lanyard or keep in the tank bag. That way the flip out key can go safely in a pocket and remain there all the time I am riding.
Great idea, but be warned certain people on here do not want anyone to get on, they stink of jealousy
Thats what ive done now. My GS keys have always been on a lanyard attached to a clip inside my jacket. New bike with flippy key and keyless ignition along with a new jacket without a clip in the pocket and im really confused. Must be a age thing. Anyway flippy key all sorted now and spare dumb key for all the locks on the lanyard.
If you just need a mechanical key for the seat, panniers or fuel cap, or to replace the blade of your broken flip out key, ask your locksmith to get a JMA ZA14P and cut it to match your transponder key.
Thanks to the OP, I just ordered a key from Chris. Super quick response and cutting it from a photo, good service thus far. My local key place, admittedly in our one horse town, was totally baffled when I asked them to cut a duplicate of my red key. Lots of sucking in of air through teeth and discussion between the two guys that work there. They concluded that the only option was to go back to the supplying dealer... I just want a dumb key for emergency use, in conjunction with the PIN code for the ignition, when on tour so I can access luggage and the fuel cap.
