998 Broken-hearted: Fairing And Mirror Help, Please!

  1. Can't believe it. What an ar*e I am for riding tired!

Me and my gorgeous 998s (just out of 9yrs storage) out last night and took a short-cut on a B-road I've not been on before with no signposts.

Mountain biker going in the other direction waved to me: just distracted me momentarily as the road dropped off into a horrible blind, tight, off-camber drop. Just edged off the road on to the verge All my own fault for riding when tired! Totally gutted. On the other hand, he heard what happened and came right back to help me pick her up. Turned out he was an R1 rider.

Anyway, after picking her up, I remembered why I used to race these - they crash so well!

Apart from levers, clip-on, etc. (which I have spare from my racing days), left hand upper and lower fairings were all that was damaged badly. Any recommendations on having these repaired? They're not broken; just serious, deep-scored road rash.

Also, am I right in surmising that new mirrors are available in black only? I presume the same suggestions for repairs would follow for mirror painting?

Finally, the indicator mounting was popped out of the carbon air-tube. Would epoxy be the best way to secure this again. The hole just seems to be elongated; there's no tear in the carbon.

Thanks, as usual, for all your help.

  2. Hi mate. Shit luck that!

Fairings normally can be repaired depending on how bad they are / bits or tabs broken off... Get some photos up.

The nutsert on my CF air tube was lose when I bought them. I cut a flat at the edge of a washer and fitted that inside the air tube with a nut at the back

  3. Oh bugger!!!!!
    Glad your ok

  4. What a brilliant idea!

    Thanks, mate. Much appreciated.

  6. oh bugger 2

  7. Whoops. Bikes can be mended much easier than people.

  8. One answer for the tricky repair of the carbon tube would be to machine a larger insert and drill the hole to the right size and glue it in, If I am reading this correctly. I have a lathe and could make one if you want to go in that direction.

Aftermarket mirrors are available and come in the normal matt finish and I have also seen them in gloss black, under £30. FAR made the original mirrors and a genuine one is better, painting will be needed on top of that. Quite an easy job and I have colour coded many mirrors myself.

If you do it yourself you will need to make up a "tool" to hold the mirrors while you work your way around painting them.

The 998S has the bellypan and split 2 sided panels. Any grazes are easy enough to fix and I also can, possibly, time allowing, do plastic welding if you needed it. I do have a plastic welding heat gun and plenty of rods. I have also repaired a lot of panels by welding over the years.

The harder part will be getting replacement stickers to put on freshly painted panels. They are no doubt still available from Ducati though.

  9. I have a brand new unpainted upper left fairing if interested

  10. I dropped my garage door on my LHS Pani mirror yesterday, what a tit! £140 replacement should act as a reminder to move it the extra 6 inches required, oh and got notification of a parking charge (I got out of) and took the end of my index finger off trying to catch a carving knife! One of those I wish I'd staid in bed days

  13. Hey Red998, that's really kind of you, mate. Let's see whether I can get some second hand ones on eBay (a guy in the US has some, but would rather not ship overseas). Would you be interested in doing a mirror for me? PM me if you would.

    Cheers
