I've been working on fixing my [848] bike after a crash and finally got it running again. Took her round the block and everything seem to be in working order, though I've still to give it a proper test ride. The bike needs a service+7.5k valve adjust anyway, but figured I'd give her some fresh oil + filter just now, thought it would be a good thing to do before riding any further. Warmed the engine up, drained the oil and discovered that my oil plug magnet looks like this: Hmm. I'm going to take out the gause filter too and clean that off, and strain through the oil to see if I can find any bits floating in that. It's strange though - would have thought that the broken bits would have worked their way back onto the magnet and stuck there? The other possibility is that the magnet didn't break during the crash (side swipe at ~15mph, not huge impact in the grand scheme of things, but magnets are fairly brittle), and was already broken before. Previous service was at Ducati Glasgow...does anyone know if SOP would be to replace the drain plug if found in this condition? Just hoping that the plug was already like that and I don't have bits of magnet scattered around the inside of my bike. Seemed to run just fine though, no strange noises or anything. Found a replacement on eBay for £12 so will order that up anyway...don't want to risk more bits breaking off this one.
I'd have thought that it's much more likely that the magnet has been broken at a service. There is nothing that it could contact in an accident. For £12 you'd be daft not to replace it anyway.
Good stuff, that's exactly what I thought but figured I'd proceed with caution. Didn't find any metal chunks in the oil. The gause filter had a couple tiny little metal flakes, and some weird green plastic bits, but I don't think it's too big a deal. Ordered the new plug now so just got to wait until that arrives before I can refill the oil. Cheers!
Hi. Just a tip. Be very wary of the cheap drain plugs on eBay as the have been known to break up while fitted. Has happened quite a few times. A few metal shavings in the profiler is normal. Just have to hope and pray if you see brass coloured shavings in there. One last thing, always a good idea to replace the four bolts holding the pre filter cover on for cap head bolts. Did yours come out easy enough? Ian
The one I ordered said it was genuine Ducati so should be all good. Nope, nothing brass coloured! What would brass mean? I should be okay reusing the four bolts - they came out without any problem at all and seem to be in perfect condition. EDIT: Do you happen to know the nm torque setting for those four bolts? I've got the manual here, Engine Bolt Torque Settings section, but I'm not sure what they call those four bolts. Nevermind! Found it - it's 10nm 'Oil pick-up gauze filter bolt' - Duh!
Big end going. Happened to a member on here and cost him a pretty penny for a new crank and all the labour. I've just been looking for the thread now but couldn't find it. It's either in the technical section or the 848 / 1*98 part. I remember when I did mine I changed the bolts because a lot of people had problems getting them out and knackered them up. Must admit that mine came out alright but as I had the bolts readily available at work, I'd change them anyway. Just used a bit of 3 bond type stuff for the plate cover seal but I did replace both O rings on the strainer. Did mine at 14,500 miles ish.
Looks like it. But it was soft aluminium so didn't really read much into it... What you can't see in the photo is the small blobs of white / transparent silicon. Was told that that was normal anyway. Did the pre filter on my 998s the other week during it's service and that had even less in it!
