Hi guys, having recently checked the valve clearances on my 1299 panigale I’ve noticed that the exhaust side valve collets for the closer shim are broken into a couple of pieces obviously they were still holding the valve in place! As you can see they are fractured in the shim. The bike is used only on track and has had another 1000miles on it after a recent engine refresh! The clearances are still in spec after checking but concerned about what would cause the collets to be broken? Cheers for any advice!
2V motors fracture them regularly, 4V tend to be when used hard. There's no hard and fast reason and a few explanations, but short answer is replace them and check the clearance again. It will change (tighten up)
Because of this known problem I've run MBP collets in both my 2v and 4v Desmoquatro motors, for many years (shortly after the WDW2000) without any failures to date. I thought the Pani's etc had Ducati's version of the MBP's as standard? If so it sounds like they lack the quality of the MBP's. Steve R
Ok seems to be something unavoidable! At the end of the day theres no way they can escape as they are held in place by the top shim. I’ve played around with the spec by running them at the tighter and loose end of the spec and they still seem to fracture after after a few miles of track use. The intake valves have a more traditional style of valve collet that sits in the closer shim and looks similar to the style of Collet in engines with valve springs. The exhaust valves have traditional half rings.
