Hi. Just joined and am getting my first MTS so am hoping to get some advice.. I've decided on a 'S' Touring version Gen 1 (2010-12 w Ohlins) or Gen 2 (2013-14 w Sachs/Skyhooks) 1) which system is better - the Ohlins or the Sachs/Skyhooks? 2) What are common issues/faults to look for? 3) other tips and accessories to look for? Trying to get a bike that has just had its major (30K km) service without being excessively high (up to ~40K) - Secondhand prices in AU are a lot higher than EU/UK/US and this is still about the same I paid for my last bike new ('13 Husqvarna Nuda 900R - albeit I got $3.5K off).
Eukol, Welcome. I've got a 2013 MTS 1200 ABS (base model) so I cant help you with the decision between Ohlin's vs Sachs skyhook. I can say that the standard suspension when set up correctly handles very well and easily copes with our very crappy NSW roads. Thus far (17000km) the only issues I've had are the fuel sender unit failed (I replaced that myself) and the gear position sender unit recently played silly buggers when I was on a ride in torrential rain (but it seemed to rectify itself when it dried out) which it has never done before when riding in the wet. One thing to consider though is that services are pretty hexy (Frasers are about $400 - 500 for a base service and when I rang to enquire about the desmo service they told me $2000! Having said that, the desmo service is only every 24000km or 60mths. There are some places that quote $1200 but I don't know if they do the full desmo service). Accessories on mine are limited to a Pikes Peak screen, radguard, and a Mivv Oval Carbon exhaust (had an Arrow on it but found it kept rubbing against the rear tyre which pissed me off.....now waiting on a welder to modify the decat pipe, but I reckon I'll stick with the Mivv as it sounds better). Its easily the best bike I've every had....I love it. Rgds, PK1
Best advice would be to test ride both so you can compare. Welcome to the forum from a very happy 2010 touring S owner.
Welcome mate! I cant help ya with that one but there will be a plethora of great advice from the other members! Happy hunting!
X2 on Öhlins Mechatronic-watch out for fork seals on Öhlins models. Belt service is most expensive-that's a point to consider. Heated grips can fail, as can fuel sensors. Loved mine with full Termi system on it.
