C-spanner For Shock Absorber

  1. I've just got round to fitting the panniers that I bought some time ago, which prompts the thought that I should do something about adjusting the suspension.

However, if I want to set the ride height at the rear I'll need a C-spanner (or two: my shock appears to have a lock-ring as well as the main adjuster).

The ST2 parts list that I have doesn't mention such a thing, although I've seen allegations that the tool-kit contains one (the kit that came with the bike doesn't have one) and searching the inter-web hasn't produced any useable results.

So -- what do other owners do?

  2. Depends on the state of the rings.

If stuck and without the right wrench, you can knock it round with a flat head of some kind, but of rag or similar and a hammer. Done that lots of times.

    You only need one btw

  3. This picture suggests otherwise, or am I misunderstanding something? I'm pretty sure I've seen a ref somewhere to alternatives with/without lock-rings (I'm open to the suggestion that a heavily spring-loaded nut doesn't really need locking).

On a related point, the owner's handbook rather vaguely refers to "standard spring length" of 160 mm, but doesn't say whether that's a standard setting for an installed spring, or its length uncompressed).

    Again, info welcome.

My rings seem entirely unmolested; I'm hoping to keep them that way …

  4. A short move of the locking nut and it moves easy from there. Just wind the locking ones a few turns out the way, set shock, then lock up again.

Only one with no locking nut I’ve seen is if hydraulic, like a remote pre load adjusted on the ST4S or similar

    Unfitted spring length

If you feel like replacing! I’d look for a remote adjuster one. I had one on my st2, not only a better shock (ohlins) but so easy when touring and wanting to up it a little.

  5. TBH matey, looking at the state of the shock in tha5 pick (not judging, just old bike) I’d be inclined to tap it with blunt screwdriver or maybe a file with a square end
