Cam Belt Change Interval For Gt1000

  1. I bought my 2010 gt1000 second hand nearly twelve months ago now.It had 8000 miles on the clock so i took it in for it's first major service asked them to change the belts as well because it was three years old.I also change the engine oil every 3000 miles. The manual says change the cam belts every 15000 miles on this ds1000 twin or every two years? i don't ride it that hard most of the time what do you guys think ? thanks in advance for any advice.

  2. It sounds as if you are only one year into new belts. The 15,000 interval sounds OK, but unless you ride a lot, you are more likely to clock up the 2 years sooner... in which case personally I would not lose any sleep over leaving it another year or two, unless there are waranty implications.

Perhaps more important is to consider aspects like how long you leave the bike standing with the belts unmoved (e.g. several months over winter?) and how often to whip the covers off and have a close look at the condition of the belts, and to check the tension. I've recently changed 900SS belts that had probably done only a couple of thousand miles in perhaps 5 years, and the old ones look fine. They are very strong and of course with desmodromic valves they don't suffer as much stress as do belts in most car engines.

  3. change them every 3 years on the monster and 900SS

price of belts is cheap compared with the price of broken belts

its your money and your choice how often you change them

  4. I ride the bike most weekends.Thank you for easing my mind a bit.
