Can I fit a smaller number plate to standard bike...

1. Probably a noob question and tried doing a search but here goes.....

Is it possible to fit a smaller number plate to the standard rear fender on the MTS12? I don't wan't a tail tidy as I like the mud guard protection and the indicators but god is the standard plate big and ugly

2. Yes, as long as the numbers and letters are the same size, and the space is the same. Most people do fit smaller number plates. I have fitted a 8"x5" plate for years. But you can still get pulled by the old bill. Its the really small plates that me laugh ie 6"x2.

3. And an 8x5 will mount on the original fixtures?

4. why not experiment with a flat piece of card........

5. I'm not adverse to doing a little bit of experimenting but if someone has already done it and it's straight forward then I like to save time

6. you drill the holes yourself, any size will fit

7. we are talking about a number plate here....... i should think it took you longer to type on here than offering up something of the size you want...

8. I did say it was a noob question!

Cheers All

10. if the current plate is held on by the plastic screws and nuts it wont take much to undo them and then measure the area of the mounting holes to see how small you can go utilising the std mount..

11. Did you know?

If you want a road legal registration number plate it has to comply with BS AU 145d. This gives number plate details for all vehicles however in the case of a registration mark fixed on a motor cycle, it should have two rows of characters and each character of the number plate should be 64mm high x 44mm character width x 10mm stroke width. The Space between two characters within a group (row) is to be 10mm. Horizontal space between groups should be 30mm. The minimum margin around the characters is 13mm. This is smaller than that fitted to a car.

I've fitted a smaller rectangular plate no probs and have never been stopped.

12. Top tip :

Whatever plate u go for nudge nudge wink wink, and you are caught by the law (usually they wont bother btw but u may get a bad day)

The common thing to say is to say you took the bike to a show and it's a show-plate, you should get a doc to take to garage and get signed.

Dont go too ridiculously small btw or try and hide the plate, I would aim for something like the size of a kindle/book/mini ipad

Bugs

13. 9" x 7" is the standard UK number plate size.

6" x 4" is the smallest that is still sensibly readable.
It is noticeably smaller though, and may attract attention if your unlucky.

I've fitted this size to most of my bikes and never had a problem though.

14. Do people go with a Border and the GB symbol/3D font?

Also can anyone recommend a good site to order from as I have previously had some of terrible quality?

15. If you go small, avoid any border as it just makes the letters smaller or closer together.
I would also suggest not to go for 3d letters. It just makes the plate even less legal.
You might get away with a small plate being readable with normal letters, but anything else is reducing your chances.

I've used showplates2go.co.uk before, but also bought from shows.
Never had a bad plate so far

16. if you choose the country badge on the side, the lettering becomes much smaller, showplates2go.co.uk says its legal, but I have my doubts.

17. well strictly speaking 6x4 isnt legal anyway.
I don't have any country badge on my small plates for that reason.

Maybe try a few other sites too, see what their web sites show.

18. Personally, I go for a slightly smaller than standard plate because I like the plate to be in proportion to the bike - think mine is about 7x5.....touch wood never had any problems with plod

19. Word of caution, I was stopped by the police (bike copper as well) for having a plate 3mm too close the the numbers/letters. He got out his ruler, measured me up for size, found me to be 'inadequately proportioned' and gave me a fine!

So, measure carefully....you never know when you might be caught short!

20. www.design-a-cover.com Guys name is Tim, never had a problem. I always go for the 8x6 size, inch smaller both ways. Its looks tidy without taking the p*ss. Standard letters with a GB stamp.
