As above. I already have 2 optimate 4 chargers. I also have an optimate to powerlet connector. Can I plug my optimate with powerlet connector into my powerlet socket under the seat to charge and maintain? I would rather not have to buy another charger or have to mess up the neatness that lives under my seat with extra wires. (attaching 2 wires to the battery for an optimate lead)
Providing your powerlet socket on the bike is live when the bike is switched off, then yes. I used to charge my ST4S that way.
Thanks. I did try and plug it on when I got the bike back from the dealers but the light showed green as in there was no charging needed. I wasn't sure if it was a special Ducati thing.
Except that the socket under the seat is not live when the bike is switched off, not unless you have re-wired the socket direct to the battery. (Refers to MTS1200)
Check also the fuse rating on the socket circuit against the max output of your charger. Not my favourite way of charging tbh, moreso on the newer bikes.
I have the red and black wire that has an optimate connector. The ones that would attach to the battery directly and would dangle outside the seat with a weather seal on it. I just didn't want to start ham fisting the lovely neatness that is there at the moment. I could on theory buy the Ducati charger that fits in the DDA port under the seat but that's £66 approx for something I already have. (£66 of petrol i.e.)
Understand  just had a look and the circuit is run thru a 10A fuse so you should be fine. It covers power sockets, nav and alarms but as the bike will be off, can't see it being a problem. My charger boosts to 5A. I don't have info to hand on Optimate 4 but can't seeing it being that much. As mentioned, see if it's live with bike off else no charge will take place.
I believe the maximum current supplied by the Optimate 4 is 2.8amps. Since you have the appropriate adapter I can see only one issue. If the lead from the optimate with the adapter was to short out, say it fell on a metal part of the bike, it would spark. Potential for fire here! Further the spark may damage the metal....not to metion what it may do to the charger. In electrics plugs receive power, sockets give it...
Just connect the eyelet lead to the battery, feed down right hand fairing and cable tie to sub-frame behind right calf. I have this and my Keiss heated gear plug mounted here and if you get enough slack on the ends past the tie, they tuck back up under the side panel when not in use. Power sockets are switched off with ignition shut down.
From the handbook, the power socks are pwered when the bike is switched off. See below - it didn copy and paste very well i'm afraid. Importantwhen the engine is off, do not leave accessories connected to the power outlets for a long period of time as the motorcycle battery could run flat.
What year is that from? My 2010 sockets power off when the ignition is switched off. I know because my Autocom system power is spliced into the left hand socket and only works when the bike is powered up (ignition on).
That is from the MY13 handbook that I dowloaded in prep for the arrival of my new toy. Perhaps it is another change? Or a printing error! Not able to cofirm for a few weeks I'm afraid.
Lol, knowing Ducati it will be a misprint? Or maybe they have changed it - It would be good to power them when ignition is off, as I wanted to charge my iPhone overnight when camping.
Well I was getting a green light - no charge needed with both sockets under the seat. I have now used the optimate to battery eyelet connector that sits under the seat next to a socket on the right haand its working as expected now. I
I have a 2010 and the factory fitted Merit sockets are definitely OFF when the bike is off. I did this after about the second week of owning the bike:

When I got the bike I was a little surprised to see the battery charger cable was a bullet type hanging out the back. More Technical. Cut off the standard dodgy 2 pin charging plug hanging out in the breeze near the right rear footpeg hanger (this really looks like an afterthought). Note that this wiring goes directly to the battery terminals. Unless you do something really dumb, there is no way a modern, correctly specified battery charger could affect the bikes systems or CANBUS. It takes a few minutes on orange (charging) to go to green (holding). I don't do this all the time, only if I am travelling for a few weeks and the bike is in the shed. No problems at all. Also, If I need another accessory socket that is always on (like for a camping light) I can just plug it in there. I would not ride the bike with a wire in there though. Too close to the moving wheel. Hope that is useful.
