Can the clutch cable be adjusted ?

  1. I hope this isn't another 1 of my Homer Simpson moments..... 'DOH'

    Ive just taken the bike out but when I tried to move the bike, physically, it was in gear so I pulled the clutch lever in which freed it off enough to move the bike but you could tell it hadn't fully disengaged. When I got back I thought there would be some sort of adjustment I could do on the cable in case it had stretched and therefore not completely disengaging the clutch. Another thing I have noticed is that I'm finding it very hard to change gear and find neutral. I just put it down to the fact that I had my trainers on ....tut tut I know but was only going 1/2 a mile

    What do you guys think

  2. There's no cable. It's a hydraulic system. Not masses of adjustment other than the span adjuster on the lever. The further the lever is out, the more fluid is displaced and more disengagement you'll get. Downside.....if you've only got small hands then the lever could be too far away.
    It may be that the system could do with bleeding. Any air in there will detract from getting full movement and hence feel like it's dragging.

  5. you can adjust the clutch bite with a very small allen key and a small spanner - look where the plunger goes into the master cylinder....

Agree with Nelly re span adjustment - fully out it's easier to engage neutral - but you can keep a small span and adjust the 'length' of the plunging action how I describe above....you need the small allen key to loosen the locking screw and then there is a nut to turn the bolt either in or out then tighten the very small locking screw back up


    Don't turn the bolt out too much though or it will fall out!!

  8. Hi knightrider, you don't say what mileage you've done, but check for leakage from the slave cylinder, hey have a bit of a habit of leaking. Mine went after about 12000 miles and I had the same symptoms. I had to replace the slave cylinder to cure the problem. When i got the new cylinder from Ducati it had a modified push rod. The modification stops the push rod from spinning when the clutch is pulled in.

Been out and had another look, when pulling in the lever it pulls nearly all the way to the handlebar without too much resistence so hopefully will just need bleeding and wont be something more serious like a new master cylinder needed. I'm going to ask local dealer to have a look tomorrow. Thanks again for the help guys and thanks Supervee for not being to hard on me ..... but..... yet again Ive learnt something new again today ;)
     
  10. I wouldn't touch the plunger, or at the very most only screw it in to the barrel. Screwing it out can/will cause the cylnder to pump up and eventually cause the clutch to slip. Doing it on the brake will cause the front to lock up.......
    Its there to set the free play on the master cylinder when the cylinder is released. If there's no play the chambers can't equalise when you release the lever so you get pump up....
     
  11. Thought I would have a go a bleeding the master cylinder, I mean how hard can it be ;-) Didn't make any difference. Checked the slave cylinder and all looks ok from the outside, no visible leaks.

    Not gonna touch anything else and just let dealer sort it. Can the slave cylinder fail even if no leaks are visibleand if it needed replacing would I be better with OEM or Oberon. Bike out of warranty late 2010 8.5k miles

    there have been reports of the slave cylinder sticking....I think it means the piston sticking in the slave cylinder! Apparently the tolerances are either too close or not close enough....some have used Oberon slave cylinders to fix this!

    Mine did this last winter (not the one were still in :mad:) and basically if you pulled the lever in the clutch never came out again, ie until u pumped it a few times then suddenly it would pop out and if you weren't holding on..... Like a bucking bronco !

    As the winter wore off the temperatures improved and so did the clutch so I never did anything about it....I think now the bits have worn themselves in as it has not happened this winter!

    Not sure this is the same issue you are having? But at least you won't feel alone :tongue::tongue:
     
  13. I'm going for one of these when mine gives up and towards the end of last year it was making a right old racket! Seemed ok on Sunday when I took her out though.....
