999 Can You Fit 998 Clocks On A 999?

  1. I have a project bike that is largely a 999. I have a DP ECU that I am told allows any clocks to be fitted for race purposes so it's not allegedly bothered about the 999 clocks being there. I have no antenna, and the ignition barrel is off a 998. I presume I can firstly get the ignition barrel connected and it would work in the same manner as a 999 but do I need to switch off the immobiliser in the ECU if indeed it is even on in the DP ECU? Once the ignition works, what do I need to do to make the 998 clocks work with the 999 remaining loom, any ideas from you electrically skilled folks? Cheers! :D

  2. 999 uses a CAN bus between ECU and dash - so I'd guess it's a no go with the 998 unit.

  3. 998 clocks use a mechanical speedo drive, 999 is electronic off the rear wheel, so you'll need to get the speedo drive off the front wheel.
Signal wise, the 998 clocks will need individual signals picking up from ECU probably as the can bus signals won't be any good. Temp gauge was fed off a separate sender on the stat housing iirc.

  4. Thanks guys, so that sounds like a very basic no can do. Where I want to end up is using a race technology Dash 2 dashboard which I know is possible. The problem I have is the electrical wiz who will plumb the dash 2 in wants the bike running so he knows the dash is the only challenge. If that is necessary do I need to get a 999 dash? Could I go straight to the dash2

  5. If you use or adapt a 998 wiring loom and a speed drive front wheel then I would have though it might be possible but everything electrical should be based on a 998 loom etc. to make it match and be viable.

The 998 uses a different ECU mounted near the battery on this model so that would need to be included.

You would also need to figure out how to mount the dash assembly and also the mass air flow sender.

  6. What's your budget? Google 'Riderlogic'. Wayne is based in OZ and has been working on interfacing different dashes into the canbus system. Send him an email and see if he can help.

  7. Thanks chaps. So as everything is currently based on a 999, it looks like that is the way forward. I think what I'll do is get the 999 loom and ECU installed and source a lock set and clocks to just get it all working which hopefully I can resell later when the Dash 2 is plumbed in. Chris at X.bikes is in the frame to do the Dash 2 conversion and he knows a thing or three about canbus and ECU setup so I'm hoping that part will be doable. Right, as per the other recent thread, time to scour flea bay for some clocks and sets of keys! Thanks for your input folks. ;-)
