Can't work out what the fuel reserve indicator is trying to tell me...

  1. Okay I have read the manual....

    To paraphrase;

"The fuel reserve indicator tells you how far you have traveled on reserve in kilometers"

Fine ( although I would prefer it to tell me , in miles, how far I have got left - ie range - before the fuel runs out but no matter.)

But in my case it works like this...

    Yellow reserve light comes on.

Indicator says " F 00" ... so far so good.

Travel less than a mile indicator say "F 03" ???

Travel another mile indicator says "F 05"

Travel 2 miles back home and indicator say "F 20" and so forth.

So is the indicator converting 1 mile to 5 kilometers or am I missing something?

  2. 0.3 mile
    0.5 mile
    2.0 mile

  3. Ah! Thanks for that!

    Now I understand!

  4. Good to know that!
Does anyone know what's the approximate range on the reserve?

  5. No but it went to 9.8 on mine yesterday before I trundled into a petrol station.

A quick check on the owners handbook tells me that reserve is about 3.5 litres, I think thats nearly a gallon so twenty miles could be possible taking it easy, any further would be guesswork on my part though I'm sure someone on here could work it out.

  6. I called RAC van when she was at 21.0 .....

  7. I thought it's probably best to never push it above 20 :) Thanks

  8. Personally I never go further than 15 miles. More often than not I find a petrol station within 5 miles of the reserve light coming on.

  9. Just been out for a spin tonight come back with 17.0 indicated so I'm pushing it now....

Also I have trouble accurately measuring the level that I fill the tank. According to the manual it seems to suggest stopping when the fuel level is just beneath the lip of the filler 'extension' as it protrudes into the tank...not only is that devilishly difficult to judge when you're peering down the 'ole but that seems to leave a lot of fresh air at the top...when they calculate the tank capacity do they take that into account?

  10. I fill it to the top. Never had a problem so far.

  11. I fill my tank up to the 'filler extension'. Had the bike 4 years & it has been fine so far.

  12. Ok - for the sake of completeness and for the record I got to the petrol station with "18.5" showing on the reserve indicator and filled her up to what I judges was the maximum...level with the bottom of the lip of the grey "filler extension" or whatever you'd like to call it.
It took 13.6 liters which means I either still had 1.4 liters in reserve or I'm still not filling it up enough.

Hmm 1.4 liters should mean 13 miles until she's running on fumes.

In which case I would be very brave to wait until my RI indicates 31 miles!

Of course that depends on how full is "full"

Actually I just worked it out that since my SC does about 35mpg and the reserve holds 3.5 liters that SHOULD give me a maximum range of 32 miles before it shuts itself down - which tallies up with my 31 miles above.

Brave person to push it to the absolute limit though...
