916 Carbon Tank Vent Hose Options Suggestions Please

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Kie, Mar 23, 2022.

  1. My 916 has a new (to me) DP/MS Productions carbon race tank. What are you fellas doing for the vent tube? The way I have it configured now fuel pours out when the tank is full. Not ideal!

The white nylon union is just a reducer to size the hose down as it exits the tank. There is no sort of one-way valve or anything of the sort.

Should there be? Maybe some sort of mini-charcoal canister gizmo? Maybe you’re just supposed to route the hose so high at some point the gas never gets up there?

Please forgive my ignorance. I’m open to any and all suggestions especially if there is a common solution that everyone but me knows about.

  2. Sorry gents I was being a bit dense. All I had to do was steal a one-way check valve from one of my dirt bikes. This is a “FREE-flo” brand plastic valve that just plumbed into the line.

I noticed on 90’s WSBK ducs they attached the hose to the left fairing ear so I did the same.

I took out the 3 fairing screws on the left and I sneakily threaded a small plastic zip-tie through the 3 empty holes in the windscreen only and positioned the hose with the length I wanted/etc. The fairing screws went right back in even though on the screen each hole has a screw and a zip-tie in it.

    Pretty sano methinks.

  4. i used to have a carbon tank on my old 996, what you need is this -59320041A fuel tank breather valve
if your not carful with the position of the pipe without a NRV then the fuel can be syphoned from the tank as you ride due to pressure differential ( Bernoulli theorem)
also you may need a small catch tank /expansion bottle, but i cant find the number online at the moment

  5. Thanks! Yes Bernoulli’s ghost visited my bike and I yesterday from beyond the grave.

The dirt bike valve I have plumbed in replicates what the Ducati part would do. I do like the look of the factory part though. Factory-fitted (#17 below) on a 888 or 900SS. The factory part and the lines are all still avail for reasonable sums so I may as well make it factory.

  6. Yep same as I did a few years ago.. using the 900ss /888 part numbers.
I think is also fitted a small plastic catch container from the 916 racing parts list ( if anyone has that on pdf?)

  7. Is the catch can just in case the valve fails?

The 888 and 900SS just vent to the atmosphere.

  9. I fitted a Simple 1 way valve on my tank, 0 issues and no catch tank.

  10. Thinking about it, that’s an MS Production tank and I think the tank breather outlet is protected in some way to stop fuel spurting out under braking.
On another carbon tank I fitted, I used a Newton one way breather.
